I just learned about Shinbone Alley this week and am now surprised I didn't hear about it long, long ago. The movie was released back in 1971 and shows all the visual stylings of low budget animation from the period, but I found it fascinating, and the character of Mehitabel was really interesting on both a visual and character level.
"If she didn't roll her eyes
Tease you, feed you, tell you lies
Always act contrarywise
A woman wouldn't be a woman"

Wow it's good to know that someone else has heard about this movie. I use to watch it when I was a kid. It was a deeper movie than I could comprehend when I was a kid, but a few years ago I got it and watched it with my wife and it renewed my love for it all over again. Another thing that I thought was awesome is that it was a Mel Brooks movie. I know right?
I love the advertising line from the movie poster: "Sophisticated enough for the kids, simple enough for the adults!" I'm only just introduced to the story and I'm curious to learn more about the earlier incarnations, ie: the stage play and the . According to one online commentary the movie was originally on track to be the first X-rated cartoon prior to the release of Fritz the Cat, and that surprised the hell out of me. I can imagine how it might have been, but the activity remaining onscreen seems so timid compared with what such a rating would suggest.
Also (likely) in print (or at abebooks.com) -- the several text collections of "Archy and Mehitabel" by Don Marquis (with illustrations by George Herriman, who did the 'Krazy Kat' comic strips).
Don Marquis wrote daily newspaper columns, many of them humorous. One set of re-occurring characters were in the inserted stories supposedly written by Archy, the cockroach living in Marquis' newspaper office. They featured Mehitabel the alley-cat, but other characters, too.

You captured how rowdy and sassy she can get at times. Also she looks very cool and awesome in the picture. She was part of the reason why I seen "Shinboen Alley" on video and DVD, and part of why it was one of my favorite movies. She was so sexy, so rowdy and funny, but also tend to have some tragic moments as well.
I, too, was surprised that I hadn't heard of this movie long ago. I saw it for the first time recently and I was stunned by how good Carol Channing was as Mehitabel. The story, however, really turned me off; I found Mehitabel's too-casual attitude toward her own children to be a major downer.
