This is the command, control, and communications nerve center of the USS Iowa, which is surrounded by a 17-inch-thick citidel of RHA Nickel Steel.
After the Iowa's 1984 refit, this compartment's functions were largely overshadowed by the addition of a CIC (Combat Information Center), located much deeper inside the ship, but it's good to know that you can still operate it from behind all that armor.
Especially now that no one else has big guns --- conventional anti-ship missiles warheads can't penetrate even a SINGLE INCH of RHA Steel armor, let alone *17* inches!
