you make separate texture packs.
you never go into the jar file at all
you just move the packs into the texturepack folder.
i use magic launcher, so all i do is save all the mods into a folder, and then load them all into magic launcher.
its easier than adding the mods manually.

Here's the texture pack that did me in back then. I checked, and it's the same standard 16x16 resolution of the normal texture pack, so I don't know what happened.

Well, I've got MC Patcher and the texture packs, I'll back up my stuff and try it out later today when I'm not connected to the internet. I don't wanna screw up my server space as well if something goes wrong. I think my old laptop was just TOO OLD and underpowered to handle it, but this thing I got now is probably MORE than capable. Heck, I can put the distance on FAR on this.
