Journal Log, Wednesday. Location, Mountain Range near Germany. Status, remembering how bad pebbles and rocks hurt when you step on them with tender little paws...
“I know for a fact you have baby booties with thick bottoms in your pouches that’ll stop that.”
“Shut up Gaia! I’m not wearing those! They’re… demeaning…”
“And listening to you yip, whine, and cry over every little rock is getting on my last nerve! Hold still!”
“Hey! HEY! Stoppit!! Stop it already!!!”
Despite his kicking and fighting a moment later Reynard was sporting a cute baby blue set of new footwear as he folded his arms and glared up at Gaia. At least he tried before swaying on his feet a little and wiping his forehead clumsily “I… I dun feel so good…” he said weakly prompting Gaia to tilt her head as she looked at him before looking up at the sun beaming down on them from the cloudless sky “Hmmm… I think you’ve been in the sun a little too long.” She said as Reynard just looked at her in confusion “Babies, like YOU, are sensitive to heat… being in the sun too long can make them really sick.” She explained as Reynard thought back.
It was true… he remembered his mom being a little pedantic about how long he was in the sun, usually having a large umbrella to create a shady spot she made him sit under with her “S-so what do we do about it?” he squeaked, looking at the barren rocky mountain around them. Not much in the way of shade here. “Well we need to cool you down, a drink and resting should do that…” Gaia said before smirking “And it’s either finding some shade… or a nice sunbonnet to go with your booties. It’s your pick cute little baby.” She said teasingly.
Reynard IMMEDIATELY turned all his focus to finding a nearby cave or rocky outcropping. It was actually a trick his dad taught him. Usually his powers just gave him a vague idea of what was around defining it in loose terms like “Food”, “Water”, or “Danger”… but if he focused exclusively on searching for one particularly kind of natural formation or feature his senses could actually search the immediate area for it. Sure enough there was a cave nearby… somewhere… Reynard tilted his head and waddled in the direction he was sensing. It was just barren, rocky outcroppings. This didn’t make any sense… his powers never lied to him, especially not this far out in the wilderness, but he wasn’t seeing any cave here. What was going…?
Reynard’s bootie met smooth stone as he suddenly slipped and slid right into a hole in the side of the mountain, perfectly hidden by the rocks. This hole or cave or whatever it was had been there a while since the floor of it had been worn smooth by rainwater long ago… making a perfect slide as Reynard squealed and slid down it on his butt. He finally bounced to a rough stop, thankful he wore the thick brand of diapers to cushion the landing, as he looked around. The only light was coming down from above revealing a slightly wet but spacious cave that stretched off in the distance. Gaia materialized next to him, sighing as she shook her head before speaking.
“Well this is a fine screw-up, what now little one?”
“… I’m taking a milk break.”
“… right, of course.”
After finishing a baby bottle, his pouches kept things like milk from spoiling, Reynard wiped his mouth and looked around once more. “… you know what… now that I’m feeling better I just remembered something.” he said, slipping the empty bottle back into his pouches. “Good… because I checked… no way you’re getting back up there unless you sprout wings.” Gaia said, pointing up at the hole Reynard had fallen through. “Well remember we came here cause there was supposed to be some treasure a mage buried here several hundred years ago nobody ever found?” Reynard asked as the spirit just looked at him for a moment before saying flatly.
“You really think we somehow managed to blunder into the right cave on pure accident?”
Clapping his hands to summon up several foxfires to act as mobile lanterns Reynard just shrugged“… the way my luck goes? Yep.” Before he waddled further into the cave. Gaia just shook her head and floated after him, mumbling about stupid babies and their insane ideas.

Journal Log, still Wednesday... I think. Location, still Germany I hope. Status, completely lost in a cave... and getting sick of Gaia’s “I told you so” attitude.
“Well tough, long as you need me here to clean up the messes you make in your pants you’ll deal with it.”
“Whatever… you getting ANYTHING in these caves other than more caves? You’re the earth spirit!”
“Fine, fine you brat… best I can sense there’s… a huge cavern somewhere up ahead but it could just be empty or full of more strange colored moss like the last one..”
“Well it’s better than nothing, lets go.”
Waddling further into the cave network Reynard noticed something. His foxfires provided faint illumination, their flickering light dancing off the walls of the cave, but up ahead there looked to be some other kind of light. Other than that glowing moss they found earlier of course. Reynard grinned and waddled towards the warm yellow glow as fast as he could, already imagining what must be up ahead. Treasures vast and beautiful… and most importantly of all magic to get him OUT of this stupid baby body once and for all!!
And he was stopped in his tracks as he ran right into something fluffy but solid as he entered the cavern. Staggering back and falling on his bottom he shook his head to clear it and found… a huge beak and a pair of slate blue eye filling his vision. Squeaking and scooting back he saw the face was on an eagle like head with dark, ashy colored fur… with a pair of tufted ears on either side of it. Turning his gaze down Reynard saw a thick, bushy lion-like mane the same ashy color as the fur of the head was connected to a thick and powerful lion’s body in a tawny grey color. Large and powerful wings stretched slightly from the creatures back as it lay before him, regarded Reynard with a subdued look of surprise and concern. He again recognized it from his old picture book of creatures.
This was a griffin.
“How did you get down here? I thought they stopped abandoning children on the mountains long, long ago…” the griffin’s voice was deep and commanding, but there was no anger or ferociousness behind it as he stared at the fox kit in front of him “Hmm… what are we going to do with you little fellow…” he said, talking more to himself then Reynard, as he watches the fox get back up. “I KNEW it!” Reynard suddenly shouted, making the griffin’s ears shoot straight up in surprise “I KNEW there was a treasure here! There’s no other reason a griffin would be in this hole other than to guard it!”
“… my, my babies are much smarter these days it seems.” The griffin said in his somber tone, his shock at Reynard talking having passed. Ignoring him Reynard peeked around the huge creature to see more of the cavern and his jaw dropped as he saw neatly organized stacks and shelves of wealth and treasure, glittering golden in the light of enchanted torches. He naturally made a mad dash towards it, eager to find where the magical artifact was… only to yip as he was yanked to a sudden stop by the griffin grabbing his tail.
“Ah, ah, ah. That is not for little ones.” He chastised softly as he easily and gently tugged Reynard back in front of him “This treasure is under my protection, entrusted to me by my Patron. I’m afraid I would rather you not play with any of it.” the griffin said as his beak seemed to have taken on a slightly amused smile at Reynard fuming “I want the magical stuff I know your hiding in there! And DON’T CALL ME LITTLE!!” he shouted, being talked down to was one of the few things he HATED… the only one allowed to get away with it was his mom (she was his mom after all) and Gaia (who he couldn’t make stop).
The griffin chuckled softly at the outburst as Reynard tried to make another run for it… only to get his tail snagged and dragged back to where he’d started again. Growling the fox was finally fed up with playing nice and the moment the beast released his tail he took a deep breath and held it, vanishing from view completely. He mentally laughed as he tried to waddle past the griffin, lets see this thing try to stop something that was INVISIBLE from getting past him!!
“I can clearly hear that thing you are wearing rustle with every step you take.”
Reynard squealed in surprise as he was easily and gently pinned with a large paw on his tummy. Opening his mouth caused his invisibility to fail as the griffin smiled more… which just pissed Reynard off “Oh yeah!? Take THIS smart guy!!” he shouted whipping the still lingering foxfires from earlier around and onto the griffin. Reynard grinned as he watched them dance across the griffin’s body. This far out in the wilderness the flames could actually do some real damage! Any moment the guy would cry out in pain and let go of him… any minute… any… um…
“I can see you are not an ordinary child.” The beast said, not even changing his tone of voice as his fur burned. Reynard stared in horror as he watched the flames dance… the griffin’s fur was BURNING… but it was growing back so fast it might as well not have been affected in the first place! This… this wasn’t a normal power, least not one he knew about! “Oh do not look so horrified.” The Griffin broke through Reynard’s initial panic, a slightly teasing smile “I do not plan on harming you, why not cancel this flame spell and we shall talk?” he asked as Reynard nodded numbly, the foxfires vanishing.
“O-okay…”
“Thank you, now my name is Pious. Since you do not want to be referred to as Little One what shall I call you?”
“R-Reynard.”
“Appropriate, it is a pleasure to meet you Reynard. Now why do you seek the magic of my patron?”
********************
“STOP LAUGHING!!”
“Please, forgive me… it is just… the whole story is rather silly if you think about it.”
“… not to me…”
“Well no, I suppose not… but still it is the best laugh I have had since I took up guarding this treasure. Thank you kindly Reynard.”
“… does that mean you’ll give me the magical artifact?”
“No.”
“Come oooooooon!!!”
Reynard was cut off mid whine as Pious slowly rose revealing he was in fact a morph. A simple belt and loincloth made of dark cloth Reynard hadn’t noticed before being his only clothing. Before Reynard could try and scoot away Pious’s hands scooped him up under his arms and held him gently but firmly. Ignoring the foxes squirming and protests the griffin carried him into the treasure cavern. Reynard was silenced as he saw the glittering stacks of gold and silver coins, the jewel incrusted items, and the various wealth surrounding him… kept in a neat almost meticulous order.
Suddenly the treasures gave way to an empty spot, save for a pillar in the middle of it. His treasure hunter sense tingling Reynard looked to see what was on it. Sitting in a simple metal holder was a completely smooth, oval shaped deep blue gem. It was about the size of an egg and sparkled in the light of the torches… no… it was glowing on its own power! A lighter blue glow surrounded it like an aura. Used to seeing simple or ugly magic items Reynard was spellbound by this thing.
“Behold my patron’s greatest creations… the Gem of Eternity.”
“… gem of eternity?”
Pious nodded and smiled to Reynard, his voice lapsing into a reminiscing tone “Yes, you see my patron was a mage who saved me from certain death as a chick.” He explained, cradling the fox with one hand “To repay this kindness I swore my allegiance to him… but it was not to last. He was already old as mages go and as I reached my prime his life was withering away quickly. He devoted his last few years to creating something to prevent his death. This was to become the Gem you see here… as well as a failure.” Pious said, shaking his head sadly. Reynard’s ears twitched at that “… a failure?”
“The Gem grants immortality as my patron wished… but it grants it by preventing the body from changing. You do not age, get sick, and recover from any damage dealt remarkably quickly.” Pious continued as Reynard nodded, that explained why his fires hadn’t done anything “But it prevents any wounds or sicknesses you had when you used it from healing, prevents you from getting any stronger, and can trap a man in a dying body without the release of death… like my patron was.” Pious finished, hanging his head as the implications of what he meant dawned on Reynard.
“Oh…. OH…. W-what happened?”
“… to be fair… this Gem does have a way to escape. If you willingly give it to another who willingly accepts then they become its new owner and the power is passed on.” Pious explained “My patron invited me to a feast, made sure I was in perfect health, and then explained this to me… before offering the gem to me along with all his treasures. I reluctantly accepted as was his wish and watched him pass away before my eyes.” The griffin’s voice was low “… his magic was passed to his apprentice and I brought his treasures here to guard them… this was 700 years ago I think and I have been here ever since.” He finished before looking to Reynard “And that little one is why you may not have it, it is not what you seek. No, it is the opposite of what you seek.”
Reynard folded his arms and furiously mumbled under his breath words babies weren’t supposed to know before pausing and looking up to Pious and asked “… so why are you down here?” making the griffin look confused “What do you mean? I am guarding what was my patron’s…” he said as Reynard just poked his beak with a chubby finger “And is now yours, why aren’t you living it up with the rich people I keep hearing about? You got enough here that you could probably put most of them to shame…” the fox said looking at the glittering wealth.
“… I never really thought about that actually… I felt my goal was to protect this…”
“… would your pat-ron or whatever you called him what you holed up here with the immortality he gave you?”
“… to be fair no…”
“Then why not? … and while you’re at it can you help me get out of here?”
“Hmmm… yes I think I can, there is a hole In the cave I can fly you to the surface from… but first I want you to do something for me…”
“… what’s that?”
“The world has undoubtedly changed in the time I’ve been down here and you’re the first being who’s found his was down here willing to talk rather then try to kill me for this treasure… tell me… what is it like up there?”
“Well…”
“For example… this garment you wear, what is it made of? This is no cloth I know of.”
“My diaper? It’s polymer… I think...”
“Polymer? Intriguing…”
