The subcontrabasses (the ones that are twice the player's heights), well, I would like to build one so that it could fit in my house--which might take some creative designing.

I wouldn't be one bit surprised if some musical aggregation with a philosophy of having fun with music were to put together The Ultimate Recorder Ensemble! Or something like that. An orchestra with every conceivable size of recorder, all the way from those telephone-pole sized earth-shakers that are taller than the musicians, all the through the ordinary sized recorders that most people are used to, right down to the itty-bitty miniatures no bigger than a whistle and only kids can play them because an adult's fingers are too big.
I wouldn't be surpriseed at all.

AH! You mean the garklein! (Short for Garkleinflotlein, German for "very little, little flute"). It's the one recorder I will never buy, and for a very simple reason: I am physically unable to play it; it's too small.



Such orchestras do indeed exist, they're fairly common in Europe, and there are a few in North America as well. The garklein, however, is rare in those ensembles, since in many cases the sopranino is the better choice, and finding someone with small enough hands is difficult.

I didn't know the name of it! I knew there was one smaller than a pennywhistle and that adults had a hard time playing but I could never find the name. Now I know: the garfield *erm* garklien *^_^*

You might want to get one of those anyway - your collection won't be complete without it. And what will happen if a kid comes to your house and wants to jam with you?

No, a tuba is huge. It's just that this one is a lot bigger than the most familiar member of its family. When I consider "huge", I think of one taller than I am. They exist.

The lower ones have a very nice tone, too. Especially when made of wood.

I wanted to buy a soprano recorder of wood, but didn't have the chance, I'm cool with my plastic ones right now.
