A very very small Zuni snake fetish (Don't laugh, that is honestly what they're called) I carved the other day while FA was down.
About a inch long. It's very small. Carved from some slate stone I picked up last time I was in the smokies. I was drawn to it because it was in so many colors. I know it's hard to tell by the photo, but it has a very nice red blush to it. Many of the other stones are also very uniquely colored.
I realized my mistake though after many failed attempts to carve a few bowls on it. This stuff chips and flakes terribly. Makes carving it almost impossible because you're be so close to being finish only to have your work crumble randomly. I was lucky this piece held together.
It also don't like to be polished. I spent some time trying to buff it with my 'for stone' compound but ended up just painting it with clear coat because all it was doing was gumming up in the grooves.
It's a nice soft stone, but I don't think I'll do too many more carvings out of it.
