Sky "Nova" Barnard
Sky joined the Astratan Federation at a young age and showed promise as a quick fighter with an agile mind, not to mention an expert pilot in using fast ships. She climbed quickly up the chain of command over the next couple years until she was picked to lead a covert team that would infiltrate other federations.
Her group, called Team Nova, was sent on missions that were meant to never be known by anyone except those giving the orders. Sometimes it was an assassination, sometimes it was to steal or alter information or databases. She led many successful missions and quickly gained even more popularity in the federation.
The members of Team Nova were picked by her own choosing and they respected and followed her without question. One of them, a female husky named Keera, became enamored with Sky in a deeper sense than was permitted by their work relationship. But once Sky was made known of this attraction, it was the first time she broke the rules and began to develop an even deeper, physical relationship, often sneaking off together.
Unfortunately Sky could only go so long without making a mistake in one area or the other. Her group was caught infiltrating another federation, and once the Astratan Federation was confronted about it, they simply said that Sky and her team were a group of renegades that had stolen some ships and that they demanded their return.
To keep face in front of the other federations, they were then forced to sentence Sky's team with the most grievous of punishments. They set up means of torture to exact information that didn't exist simply to put on a show and fool the other federations that they hadn't been sending spies.
First all of Nova's team was hung from metal poles stuck through non-vital areas of their body. Three poles each. And because someone gave away the information of Sky's and Keera's relationship, for extra punishment the two were hung next to each other. Days went by and one by one each member of Sky's team died from the treatment. Even Keera and Sky was forced to watch as the husky shuddered her last breath before hanging limp.
The soul survivor of the torture, Nova was removed and subjected to other means. Tubes were placed in her side to feed painful substances into her body. Knives were run repeatedly over the same places over and over in a slow means of breaking through the skin. At one point they even used a cone drill and slowly, over the course of an entire day, lowered it into the left side of her chest, threatening to shred her heart.
On top of that, every night she was tied down in the barracks, leaving her at the mercy of every soldier and to be used for whatever purposes they could come up with. They were encouraged to use her and told to be as rough as they wanted just so long as they didn't kill her.
During this long period of torture, when referred to as Sky, she would shake her head and adamantly declare that being the only member of her team left she would bear the name Nova in their honor.
One of her nights tied in the barracks, one of the soldiers brought a knife into play, which turned out to be the last mistake he ever made. She managed to make her escape with that one knife, fighting her way free, unclothed and nearly bled, starved, and beaten to death.
She escaped by stealing one of the federation's fastest ships; a Skyhawk604. Barely able to fly straight, she made it to the nearest planet and practically crashed into the middle of a city's main street. Seeing the Skyhawk, they assumed she was still part of the federation and rushed her to the hospital for emergency care.
As soon as she was well enough, the now-named Nova escaped the hospital as well, taking her ship and going wherever she felt like it, housing a deep hatred for the federation that had practically raised her. Because of this hatred and the fact that she now had nothing, she soon turned to the life of piracy, stealing things from federation ships or cargo transports.
Which quickly earned her yet a new enemy by the name of the Black Fang Pirates, run by a viciously tempered leader named Wolverine. Often going for the same sources, they came to blows many times, Nova often coming off as the loser seeing as there were five of them and only one of her. But she kept trying and sometimes managed to get away with the spoils.
After one such skirmish over an asteroid of asythrimite (energy crystals used to power pretty much anything and everything) she was forced to try manually rerouting power in her engine, causing her right arm to become crushed and mangled between the engine's fan and compressor when the Skyhawk crashed.
She was found by a nearby mechanic/scrapper named Rinn Salvo who took her and her ship, rebuilding her arm to the best of his ability.
