It always amazes me how untouched these places you find are. When I was a kid I used to daydream about finding little corners of the world that hadn't been touched in years, so I could see a little snapshot of what life had been like in the past. It's as close to time travel as we can get, I suppose.
You're mostly right about the similarity to time travel. I can't stress enough that places like this are a rare find. Almost cinematic in that every movie with an abandoned building is always full and untouched. They're often empty and tagged, so getting a nicely themes shot can be daunting.
