Character owned by me.
Name: “Reynard”
Occupation: Treasure Hunter
Mental Age: 18 years
Physical age: 1 and a half
Species: Kitsune/Trickster Fox Hybrid
Personality: Self-interested and driven Reynard has no interest in being a hero or fighting evil. He is purely focused on his goal and usually can’t be bothered to care about much else. That said he’s not heartless or cruel, he just has a hard time empathizing with anyone he doesn’t know or who isn’t helping him so he doesn’t feel much for them. Past this he’s a good natured, friendly, and affectionate person who does care about the people he gets close to and would do anything to help them. Having a strong pride and ego he hates being looked down upon or treated as if he’s stupid or incapable of helping himself despite looking like and needing the same physical things a baby does. He also has a mischievous streak a mile wide and is fond of tricking or pranking people who bother him or baby him without permission (a trait to be expected of his heritage). His heritage also shows in that he can be devious, sneaky, and underhanded when it comes to getting what he wants. Despite insisting he’s mature and not a baby like he appears he has a tendency to lapse into bratty, toddler like behavior when things don’t go his way due to being spoiled and pampered for so long. Used to having a large number of people constantly around he hates being alone… which makes his travels difficult.
History: “Reynard” (not his real name) is the only child (which is odd since they were expecting a litter) of the unique union between a descendant of Fox from the Native American legends (his father) and a seven tailed kitsune of noble birth and bloodline (his mother) resulting in a unique creature being made. A kitsune’s lifespan is 1000 years minimum with them gaining a new tail every 100 years (with a max of nine) and their bodies age and develop accordingly. Which means their first extra tail starting to come in at the age of 100 could be equivalent to a 10 year old starting to show signs of early puberty. On the other spectrum trickster spirits like Fox are closer to mortals with normal lifespan and development. The mix of these two created a spirit who physically aged like a kitsune but mentally aged like a normal mortal, allowing him to mentally grow and mature when a normal kitsune child would still be fascinated with baby blocks.
Because of this Reynard truly hated the mansion where his mother kept him. Sure he wanted for nothing and was treated like a prince… but with only other lower ranking kitsunes around him he was treated like a genuine baby despite his mental growth. The only thing he really looked forward to were his father’s visits when he’d get to go out and briefly see the world and all its wonders. Unfortunately his father just stopped coming when he was 15 (which wasn’t too surprising considering the relationship between his father and mom had always been tense) leaving Reynard depressed and frustrated. While he did love his mom he HATED the mansion and how he was treated… finally after his 18th birthday he decided to do something drastic to deal with it.
Sneaking out of his crib one night he raided the family’s store of magical items and used one of them to run away from home “Dimensional Door” style, literally moving himself to another continent. Once there he started calling himself “Reynard” to further distance himself from what he was fleeing from (till he decided to go back home at least) and became a wandering “Treasure Hunter” looking for some kind of artifact, spell, or even curse that could speed up the aging process without killing him so his body could match his mind…
Now if only people would stop mistaking him for a lost child.
Mystical Abilities:
- being the child of two nature spirits (powerful ones at that) there is almost no natural environment he can't survive in be it forest, mountain, or desert. He even fares decently in ruins so long as nature has reclaimed most of it. Because of this he can avoid natural dangers, find food & water, and travel unimpeded through natural environments... with the exception of arctic and ocean for obvious reasons. His particular kind of magic also gains power when in natural environments, the more out of the way and farther from civilization the stronger he gets. Unfortunately the inverse is true and when in a city or large amount of man-made structures his magic all but fizzles out completely. His toddler body also limits the amount of magic he can use.
- He has basic shamanistic training letting him summon and work out deals with nature and elemental spirits for various things from aid in battle to advice or directions... he doesn't have the ability to MAKE them help him though so he has to work out deals, charm them, or bargain for their aid. He has made a deal with an earth mother spirit going by Gaia (not her real name) who changes his diapers for him and feeds him as needed.
- He has the basic kitsune or fox spirit abilities... but they are weak and under-developed due to his body. He can transform himself into simple objects (tiny statue, rock, anything his size or smaller) as well as change his appearance and gender (not his age sadly so he's either a toddler of some species... or a girl toddler) as well as his clothes, summon up lightning and fire (very weak and limited think battery charger or cigarette lighter), turn invisible (so long as he holds his breath which he can't do longer than 30 seconds), and conjure illusions (which he's not that good at).
- He has several magical supplies he stole from his mom before fleeing which are contained in the pouches on his belt which act as Bags of Holding for him.
Physical Abilities:
- Is only as strong, fast, and coordinated as a real baby severely hampering him when it comes to fighting or getting around. Luckily due to his species he rarely gets tired and so long as he’s in a natural environment can move fairly efficiently. Put him in a city or man-made structure though and he’s a clumsy, bumbling baby.
- He has the physical needs of a real baby including being diaper dependent and still only having his milk teeth. This hampers his travels as well.
Weaknesses:
- Cities and towns are his Achilles heel, ruining his abilities and magic for as long as he’s in or near them. Ruins don’t bother him as badly so long as they have nature encroaching on them but strong structures like forts and castles affect him unless they’re literally made out of local, natural materials.
- Being a baby is his biggest weakness and hang-up as well as the easiest thing about him to take advantage of.
- Unless he’s contracted them in advanced summoning powerful spirits takes time and effort. When coupled with having to convince them to help him it makes them useless in a panic situation.
- Despite being mentally mature his emotional control isn’t near as perfected meaning he can lose control of his emotions like a real baby fairly easily in extreme situations.
Supplies:
Thanks to his magic pouches Reynard has more supplies then you’d think a toddler his size could carry. Besides his diapers, food, and baby supplies (which he hates but needs) he also has several high quality magic items he stole from his mother’s estate before fleeing. Some of his more prominent supplies include.
Gem of Concealment – A high tier shadow magic item usually reserved for spies and assassins. It prevents magical detection of whoevers holding it by any means including scrying and divination. Since his mom is seven tails going on eight (and fairly close to being at a divine level of power) this is the only reason she hasn’t found and hauled Reynard back home yet.
Shamanism Supplies – Herbs, incense, and various tools Reynard uses to establish conduct with the spiritual world. Due to his heritage he is able to contact them far easier than a normal shaman and usually only needs the bare minimum to perform the rituals, the stronger the spirit he’s trying to contact though and the harder the ritual is for him to perform.
Shintoism Supplies – Despite having no actual training in it Reynard knows the bare basics of Shinto magic and is able to use the prayer slips he stole to do simple things like seal magic or demons and create barriers… but he is amateurish at best with this and his seals and barriers break easily.
Teleportation Mirror (broken) – Another powerful and rare artifact Reynard swiped before he fled. As powerful as they are fragile these artifacts allow the user to teleport almost anywhere in the world by simply looking into it and saying where they want to go (this only works as a single person teleport though) and can be used infinitely so long as it’s not broken. Reynard used it to escape his family home but not knowing where he wanted to go he simply asked for “Far, far away” getting him teleported away at random. In his surprise he dropped and broke it keeping him from being able to use it any more.
Totems – Separate from his shamanism supplies these are the mediums he uses for long term spirit contracts like the one he made with Gaia. As long as he has a totem with a spirit “Connected” to it he can summon that spirit to his side by just calling the name they told him… or conversely that spirit can show up at will and bother him.
Hoshi no Tama – Also known as the “Star Orb” and the most precious thing Reynard has in his possession. The Star Orbs are jewel balls that work for Kitsunes and other fox spirits, letting them channel the power of Inari their patron god and increasing their natural powers by vast amounts (usually resulting in temporary added tails if not already at 9). This particular Star Orb is technically Reynard’s birthright and he stole it hoping it could age him up… till he found out it required a lot of power to activate. Power he just doesn’t have. So he’s keeping it safe since he knows if anything happened to it his mother would tan his hide when she found out.
Miscellaneous Facts:
- Reynard loooooooooves milk and guzzles down as much as he possibly can whenever he gets the chance. When his mother breast fed him is one of his guiltiest pleasures. He’s horrible embarrassed by this and tries to hide it.
- Due to growing up away from modern civilization Reynard is tech-ignorant knowing only the very basics and not having a clue how to work anything. Because of this he’s easily fascinated by things like computers, TV, and music players to the point of regressing to a ignorant, easily amused toddler when exposed to them. He is only vaguely aware of this.
- Due to his magic fading when in them he is scared of cities and towns and hates visiting them, even when he has to refresh his supply of food and baby supplies.
- Always wears his bandanna/bib at all times since it was a gift from his mommy on his first birthday and she made him promise to do that. It actually has protection charms woven into it but he doesn’t know that and hasn’t been in enough danger for them to activate yet.
- Despite losing interest in most of his other baby toys long, long ago Reynard still has a fondness for rattles and uses them to compensate for the musical requirement of any summoning he needs to do. He also shakes them when alone and giggles at the sound they make but would never let anybody know that.
Anyway I've had this idea bouncing around in my head for a long, long, looooong time but never got around to doing anything with it... till now =3 I'm a lover of myth and legends and have always held a place in my heart for the many-tailed fox spirits of Japan, China, and Korea... so I've made one who isn't old enough to have reached the "many-tailed" part yet <w< which he's not happy about.
