The experiment plants are growing in a mixing tub but these were planted directly in a bag of compost. All I did was poke some holes in the bottom for drainage and then cut the top out. There is a micro-sprinkler on the top of the fence you can see behind it that waters every morning at about 4 am.
In the bag I planted some green onions. We cut off the root end and stuck them in around the outsides. Later we put in some potatoes that were sprouting and going soft. After harvesting them for the last two years we dug them all out this year. (or we though we had) Down the center are 4 leeks planted the same as the onions. Ate the tops and planted the root ends. You can see a potato we missed next to the big green bush and a leek. That big green bush is sweet basil. We did not plant it there, it was wind seeded from the neighbor's yard. The bees just love it

One year, when we still lived in Burbank, CA, we covered the back yard with black plastic and cut holes to insert plants.
Chris came home with about 6 pepper plants thinking them all to be bell pepper. When I read the tags I found she had gotten 3 bells and 3 Anaheim peppers. Well planted them in another part of the yard not caring if they grew or not. Those three plants grew into a four foot tall hedge (1.2m) and covered with peppers. That was when I learned when picking hot peppers to NEVER wipe the sweat from your eyes.
