Name: Taiho Harakuma
Nicknames: Tai
Gender: Male
Specials: Slowbro
Age: 17
Height: 6'1"
Weight: WOW
Personality: An amazingly, almost obnoxiously cheerful person he is all smiles and kindness to everybody he meets acting almost archaically polite to them. A docile soul when not in the ring he usually breaks up any bullying or fights he encounters as gently as he can... and if that fails breaking the floor with the bully usually solves it. He believes in hard work, honor, and conviction... sticking to your beliefs and ideals no matter what. He is also a strong believer of honor on and off the battlefield. Unfortunately this leaves him rather socially inept when it comes to his peers and he usually blunders through any attempt to talk with them he tries... though he doesn't give up and keeps trying. He also doesn't have much of a life outside of fighting and training... though he does pursue a few, rather unusual, hobbies almost religiously when given the chance.
Clothing: Taiho will always, ALWAYS go shirtless when allowed, failing that he’ll wearing a loose fitting karate top that may or may-not be fastened leaving his large stomach in full view. He also always wears baggy, martial arts style pants and rarely wears anything too different from that. His most important piece of clothing though is his “Mawashi” the traditional loincloth worn by sumo wrestlers. They come in a large number of styles and colors but he usually prefers to wear the “Formal” version made to have an apron like front as a form of status, which he’ll leave dangling out the front of his pants… no matter how many strange looks he gets. To go with the mawashi he wears a bandanna in the same color to cover his bald head. Another piece of clothing he always wears are training weights, strips of thick cloth with iron bars sewn in that he fastens and wears around his wrists and ankles.
History: The only child of the owner of a small, local gym and arena in Johto (his mother) and the strongest fighter of that arena (his father) a powerful snorlax by the name of Benkei. His mother’s family had owned the arena for generations and more importantly were the leading promoters of Poke-Sumo, a form of fighting mostly unknown or unrecognized outside of Johto (and even then most Johto people weren’t familiar with it). It also suffered from unfortunate stereotypes such as fat morphs in diapers wrestling each other. Despite this his family still strived to uphold its traditions.
It was here Taiho grew up learning how to train, how to fight, and the art of Poke-Sumo. As a little kid Taiho idolized his father’s strength and dedication to his art, the naivety of youth blinding him to his father’s violent temper and arrogance. Mostly due to the fact Benkei had a large soft spot for his son and wife. Taiho’s obliviousness lasted until someone finally managed to defeat his dad and in a rage his father ripped the victors arm off. Thus a dark time in his family’s history began as his own mother was forced to rat his father out to the police or risk becoming an accomplice and losing everything. His father was sent to jail and Benkei’s violent outbursts have kept him there ever since.
It took Taiho a long, long time to come to terms with this… but he eventually understood his mother did what she had to and while his father was a monster the ideals of hard work and dedication he’d admired WERE something worth pursuing. It was at that point he dedicated himself to become a better and stronger person than his father… and to do it HIS way with honor. Since then Taiho has dedicated himself to become strong and to eventually become a professional batter both for himself and to help spread knowledge of Poke-Sumo. During this his mother also worked hard to save up money and improve their family’s situation. Finally their hard work paid off as Taiho found himself finally able to attend the PCA.
Ability: Own Tempo
Moves:
Freshmen: Rest, Sleep Talk, Stomp, Zen Headbutt
Sophomore: Belly Drum, Headbutt, Snore, Brick Break
Junior: Drain Punch, Bulldoze, Amnesia, Withdraw
Senior: Wonder Room*, Ice Punch*, Aqua Tail*, Foul Play*
* still learning
Fighting Style: As becoming his pokemon sumo roots, Taiho fights with a very physical style, not using any special moves outside of Snore. He fights with a solid, and usual slow, stance letting most opponents come to him… though he's been learning Wonder Room so he'll be able to move in on opponents and be more active than simply waiting on them to get close. His true talent is a huge tolerance for pain and incredible endurance further enhanced by Withdraw. Though he included Amnesia (which functions as clearing his mind of all things to let him focus more on what he's doing, similar to Calm Mind) to help deal with special attackers. He can weather the worst blows then simply use Rest to recover it while still being able to fight. In fact Rest factors big into his favorite combo since he loves using Belly Drum. After having drummed and cut his HP to gain attack he simply Rests and is fully healed and ready to hurt his opponent. In a pinch he’ll use Drain Punch over Rest though.
Miscellaneous Facts:
- Taiho has several hobbies. Cooking and gardening are two of his favorites. Whenever he can he devotes as much time as possible to them (when not training) and because of that is quite skilled able to prepare restaurant quality meals as well as having some of the most spoiled bonsai trees in Johto or Kanto.
- To help with his training he also practices several forms of meditation to help clear and focus his mind… though he has tried to add yoga to that regiment recently with rather mixed results due to his body shape.
- He has a large collection of mawashi’s of all kinds, sizes, and ranks that he takes almost compulsively good care of. Oddly enough he’s eager to give these away to anyone who expresses interest in them.
- His long term goal is to bring Poke-Sumo to the general public and to at least make it better known. Because of this he is very open about trying new sparring and match styles.
