Oh, right, those things. I was never really a fan of weapons like that, but their effectiveness is amazing.
It's funny watching Ezio Auditore in Assassin's Creed using a scimitar like one of his lightweight swords. It'd be interesting to see him wielding it like one of his zweihanders or massive battleaxes.

Anyway, most weapons are only of any real use for the kill stroke. The only real blade that was ever developed for being flashy in it's use was the rapier. Swords are basically just meant to be used as cleavers. run up, sink the blade in to flesh, and hope you do so before the other guy can do it to you. These epic battles of blade on blade, the clang of singing steal... only ever happened in the movies. It is for this reason that through out all of history before the invention of the firearm, wars were not won by training, they were won by 1 part strategy to 4 parts numbers...of course... technology always plays a part as well...
