This is the side of the Iowa's "B" turret, a Mk.7 16"/50 gun turret.
The armor on this thing is mind-blowing. All four sides and the roof are each a SINGLE SLAB OF BALLISTIC STEEL, all upward of a FOOT-thick --- one Mk.7 turret by itself weighs 2000 tons!
Also, note the two little fixtures on the side of the turret; these are the Mk.7's Stereoscopic Rangefinders. Their windows are covered as seen when not in use, in order to protect them from the elements, as well as blastwaves and shell splinters.
You'll see a closer view of the rangefinders later on.
