Wow, this is beautiful! What camera settings & lens did you use to get the stars to come out so brightly without overexposing the fire?

shutter at 8 seconds, ISO at 1600, F-3.5, SMC-DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL Lens. I should have used a lower ISO with a longer shutter duration to eliminate some of the noise.

Strange, I can use those same settings with the same lens configuration (18-200 f/3.5-5.6 at 18mm f3.5) and never get anything that looks near as good as this pic.

did you use a tripod ? ( also if you are in a city the light wash from all the street lighting and cars ( light polution) drowns out the stars. This photo was taken up north in Algonquin Park, using a tripod, where there was no cities nearby for a hundred miles.

Yep, I always use a tripod and manual focus. We live out in the country but there are city lights on the horizon. I had it pointing straight up where the sky was darkest but even then it got as much ambient light as it did stars and sensor noise.

i forgot to mention i used a UV & Polarization filter too. (those help a bit) but all cameras are different when it comes to settings to get the same results, and you may have to try different settings to get similar results. (i cant remember the model one you have.)

The new one is a Canon 60D. I can't remember if I had the UV filter on it the last time I tried star pictures or if that's something I purchased after that time. I wouldn't expect that the UV filter would make a difference; an article I read about them explained they were more for use with film cameras and don't really have any effect on digital. And how well does the polarizer help considering it drops a full stop or more of light?

I never had much luck with my older Canon S5IS, probably a limitation of the CCD.
