RIP Neil Armstrong
News just broke on the passing of Astronaut Neil Armstrong from complications of heart surgery three weeks prior.
As a child of the sixties, Neil Armstrong was among the NASA Heros you followed closely.
I still remember vividly that hot July day in 1969 of Apollo 11 launching from Cape Kennedy, and the landing of the Eagle on the surface of the moon.
Followed by Neil's immortal words upon stepping on the surface of the moon.
"Thats one small step for man, One Giant leap for Mankind."
Neil remained a very private person after his NASA Career, and I got to catch a glimpse
of him at the re-dedication of Disneyland's Space Mountain on July 17th 2005 during Disneylands 50th birthday.
God Speed you Neil Armstrong!! May you continue to explore new worlds.

Um, that image of the astronaut on the Moon is of Buzz Aldrin. There is only one known photo of Neil himself on the Moon.

There is only that one 70mm still (along with his reglecyion in Buzz's visor) but there are 16mm and video images also. http://moonpans.com/Neil_Armstrong_on_the_moon.htm
I read that this morning, he's was only three years younger than my Dad is now. I wonder what would have changed is Dad had joined the Army Air Corp and not the Army... Dad was a pilot at the time too... One of those many wonders of life.
How Dad got in the Army is another story because he was under age at the time too.

I heard about Noon (PDT). Still in a bit of shock about it, because his accomplishments were so much a part of my youth.
I remember very well were I was the day they landed; I was at Tahoe (in fact, at the same family cabin I'm currently sitting in as I type). I was 8 years old then - 51 now.
Fine tribute Rabbi. Very fine.

And to think, his foot prints still exist to this very day, untouched, undisturbed, always there. He left his footprint in the sands of time where they will never wash away.
Also still waiting to hear all the conspiracy nutfucks that still say we never went to the moon and that it was all made up. *face palms* Still love when one of them jumped in Buzz's face about it and Buzz clocked the guy in the face.

Not a bad age, especially considering that Armstrong later admitted he had, back in 1969, mentally given himself only a 50-50 chance of returning alive from the Apollo 11 mission.
I fear we won't see his like again -- largely because, you know, today's idea of "a famous person" is Kim freakin' Kardashian, and secondly, even if we could afford to return to the Moon (or send men to Mars), the internet psychotics would immediately claim that it never happened.
I'd like to recommend 2 excellent documentaries about the Moon landings: For All Mankind and In the Shadow of the Moon, both available on DVD or Blu-ray. Oh, and the movie Apollo 13 as well (even though the actor playing Armstrong only has a small role in it).

People who are famous for being famous are certainly nothing new. They've been around since before Neil Armstrong was in short pants, and they've all been forgotten. Armstrong still remains the real deal.
I have no patience with the moon hoaxers either, but seeing how after having gone farther than anyone had even dared to dream, we chose to just walk away, I can see why some might decide it's less puzzling and painful to believe it never happened int he first place.

Its an odd thing to bring up, but the whole "Good luck Mr. Gorsky!" Urban legend.

It's a wonderful tribute to an amazing man, Rabbi.

Sadly, I missed that great moment. I was at camp in the summer of '69; and though they had the TV on in the main building, I grew bored with watching a vague, blurry image, waiting for something to happen, and returned to my bunk.
I'll always regret that.
God speed, Commander. 7;=e
