Yeah, "monkey presses the button" was my line in more than one BattleLords tabletop rpg game where I was the pilot stuck at the alleged "controls" of a freighter. How's it take off? Press the button. How's it land? Press the button. Why am I here? Insurance policies state someone's gotta be in that chair.

That's pretty much it, in the future computers do just about everything. Unfortunately the lack of jobs means the economy isn't too great, so the government gives big companies grants to pay blue collar schlubs like Niall to be "compliance technicians" which basically means they hang around the computer, and if something goes wrong, they reboot it. And that's his entire job.

Less responsible companies took the grant and then just used prisoners to populate the ships, every once in a while Poor ol' Niall has to deal with some other space trucker who's a completely psycho path or something.
