I heard they make good pets for beginner turtle keepers. They only grow up to 4-5 inches in length. Which means they need a reletively small tank compared to red eared sliders, the most popular pet turtle species which grow to 7-12 inches and need a 75-120 gallon aquarium. Common musks only need a 40 gallon or a 20 gallon long tank. Musks are also more highly aquatic than most semi aquatic species. They don't bask very often, but a basking spot should still be provided for them. For lighting, it is recommended to have two lamps. One with a heat bulb over the basking spot and one with a UVB bulb half over the basking spot and half over the water. If you're on a budget however, I would instead suggest one lamp with a Mercury vapor bulb which provides both heat and UVs. The basking area needs to be 85-90°F. You might want a water heater depending on where you live. The water temperature should consistantly be 70-77°F, around 80°F for hatchlings. The water should be somewhat shallow, as altough musks are highly aquatic, they don't actualy swim in the water but more walk along the bottom. If you are putting them in deep water though, it's recommended that you put some decor for the turtles to climb up to the surface on. Driftwood, large rocks and plants work perfectly for this. Just make sure to wash the driftwood and rocks in hot water to disinfect before putting them in the tank. You will also need a filter. Recommended is one meant for double the size of the tank you're housing your turtle in. Turtles are messy eaters and they poop a lot. XD Since you have three turtles, which means you might actually need a 60 gallon tank to house all three, then you will need a filter meant for 120 gallons. The general rule of thumb for turtle housing is 10 gallons of tank per inch of shell and 5-10 gallons per additonal turtle. With good filtration, you will need to clean the tank every 2 weeks to a month. Otherwise expect to do it every day or week. When cleaning the tank, change out 2/3 of water and make sure to dechlorinate fresh water before adding it. Also scrub off algae from tank walls then vacuum. Musk turtle diet should be 80% commercial turtle food and a variety of meat such as insects, snails, earthworms, crayfish, bloodworms, guppies and freshwater clams. Babies can be fed daily while adults only need to be fed once every 2-3 days. I know you're not the one keeping these turtles but you can take notes and pass this info to your sister.
