So I decided to start developing Screwball more for a possible comic in the future.
The idea behind this is Screwball's personality and life, I imagine him as this hopeless romantic, an optimist, who has enough love for the whole world.
Sadly he learns things the hard way that life never plays out how he expects and things always go wrong, hurting him in a way I think is the worst way to be hurt, through the heart.
I find Screwball too happy and bouncy and I feel this will give him a real character boost and bring him back down to earth as a relatable character.

I think it's important to strike a balance though. Character flaws are usually intended to build sympathy and provide room to grow. In that respect, subjecting a character through a horrible ordeal usually has a payoff at the end, usually a moment of emotional impact in light of the character in question overcoming what came before. Yes, reality is ugly, brutal and crude, but keep in mind that it is what your audience is constantly surrounded with, if I wanted to be reminded of that fact well, I could easily just turn on the news.
I'm not really saying that your stories should be exclusively bouncy and full of sunshine though, just that there has to be a nuanced way (and there are plenty) of weaving these sort of issues into your story without losing sight of the overall point you want to make. Think of it as the writer's approach to preparing fugu. You better know what you are doing, otherwise it'll end up being an unpleasant experience, to say the least.
I think you have a good tool in that respect in that you have a pretty appealing drawing style with the way you draw expressions and manage to get across clear emotions in them. I found the sequence at the bottom to be visually pretty charming, despite the sad subject matter.
Anyway this is just my take on it based on what you put up in the description and still keeping in mind this is just the first upload you've show that deals with this new direction you talked about, for all I know you already knew this and I'm just stating the obvious. Could be too! :B

Well I never said I was going to make him super depressed and suffering all the time, haha, I just said he was too happy and bouncy and didn't really have any flaws.
This comic was to illustrate his flaws by putting them in a situation like this that would show them, he is too trusting and lovesick and ends up falling in love with pretty much anyone who is nice to him, after having his heart broken he's a bit more reluctant to give it away, but does so and gets it broken again, it's a sad fact of life that I and many others have been through. The main point is that I wanted to show that he is a kind of living feeling thing that is not just bouncing around and hugging everyone, he gets sad and hurt and he learns important lessons about life and love.
Once I get this actual full length comic up and running it will hopefully be a bit more clear :)
