Hey folks!
Lost my matte painting virginity!
I figured that i really should improve my environments, really all i can draw almost effortlessly is mountain, but even there only one kind.
Anyway, decided that it was as good as a time as ever to spread out a little more and dip my toes into something new, and i thought that i always liked matte painting, and that it would probably be quite the addition to my current skillset.
So, yeah, that's my first try doing a matte painting and dear god was is strange...everything looked like patchwork untill the very end when finally everything magically connects. The process got some really fun parts and other very boring one, (So much channel work and color adjustments...) and my layer managment was a complete mess, which probably didn't help either.
The thing that really bugs me is the soft feeling of it. The main cause for it might be my screwed up layer management and i hope that i can get a cleaner and sharper feel to it the next time around.

A very basic description of it would be to take bits and pieces of photographs to piece together the painting. And the actual painting involved in it is kinda like those connecting dots stuff, you have the idea and photographs laid out, and then connect them with bits of freehand painting here and there so that the lighting fits, the shadows aren't pointing in the opposite direction and there are no jagged edges visible and so on. It's really quite fun in a weird sort of way, and it's a good way to get a higher degree of photorealism in a relatively speaking shorter time period.
Ah so, thank you for explanation.:) That definitely sounds like fun thing to try, I think I'll start building my own reference gallery soon, it seem that I'll need a lot of photos to choose from. I usually strive for rather fantastic shapes and colors in my art attempts, a bit of photo realism would be a nice change.:)
And thank you for the watch, it means a lot to me from such a great artist like you.:)

No problem, and definately try it! Nothing to loose, in the worst case you won't like it. But i think even trying it once is definately worthwhile since you kinda have to think about painting in a bit of a different way while doing it, and in those cases there is always a good chance to pick up some trick or something that might be useful!
