Very cool opening hook. One note though, the story mentions that the character is about 21yrs old ('about a decade ago ...I was eleven') and then the epiphany occurs on eve of his 21rst birthday; if that is true, it would seem that he should remember it to the day /very/ easily given that it was within a year or two of the present moment. I dunno if that really matters to the story but it struck me as an odd construction.
