Interesting story. There's one sentence that I think could use some work though:
the meal, was, after all free, provided by the Crown as a traditional part of the festivities.
Would stick out less if it was arranged thus:
[quote]the meal was free, after all, provided by the Crown as a traditional part of the festivities.[quote]
Overall, reading this was a nice way to spend fifteen minutes.
