Because the original design would have left the feastbeast pretty much invulnerable, and that would have made them less interesting. Every creature has a weak point or weakness to keep them from being too strong. Vampires have sunlight, werewolves have silver, fire has water, etc. Also it is fun to see how a feastbeast really is on the inside. The child reflects there true personality through it's actions.
