You know something? It was actually a bad translation that names the Tanuki 'raccoons' in the subs and dub. They're actually raccoon dogs, a type of canine: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raccoon_Dog
The picture is soooo adorable though, you captured the style really really well! I love that movie ;_;

They get mistranslated as badgers, sometimes, too. Mostly because the word 'tanuki' meaning 'raccoon dog' and ONLY meaning that is a fairly recent thing - there used to be a lot of different words for them depending where you were and sometimes those words meant something else, somewhere else XD So it's an understandable mistake, but still silly X3
I don't think I mentioned enough yet that I do love how their faces look in this picture though <3

bet you watched the disnyefied version. That totally fucked up on a few vital things for "the kid's sake"
here is a rough translation
everywere you hear "racoon" that means Tanuki (a japanese member of the dog family that looks similar but not identical to a racoon and is renown deep in their culture for having magical powers. youl also see tanuki's in inuyasha (the furry transforming guy you see every so often))
anywhere they say "Racoon pouch" translate that to testicles, scrotum or whatever makes sense in contexts. You see Tanukis are said to have the ability to shift into different shapes, something in the movie they show alllot of, but they don't explain that a tanuki's power to transform, it's magic comes from it's testicles, this is a deep belief in japanese culture.
Makes me sad, it's such a great movie, I'd prefer to have it dubs properly and not shat upon, it's also very ignorant of other cultures beliefs and traditions to simply say "well thats inappropriate so we can fib a little" and at the very least condescending to the American public and our children to think we can't grasp what a tanuki is.
End rant, I just felt I should add in my knowledge into all this, I really feel that one should learn all they can, and it's a shame that this movie was not an opportunity for the very children that were meant to watch it to "learn" something about a culture other then their own. Instead Disney spat on it and slapped a mickey mouse sticker on it.

I totally recognized the Pom-Poko parts the moment I saw this. I feel special.
I made up a song about Pom-Poko way back in the day! I'd sing it to piss off my friends.
It goes:
Poko, Pom-Poko, Pom-Poko Poko Poko... (repeat forever)
Good stuff. The raccoons and fox look very faithful to the movie.
