Let me weave you a fable ...
Lily jogged down the street to the main gate. Dr. Hanz had wanted her there for Alder’s sake and she had been able to see why. Over the past couple weeks, more hormones, pheromones and mutagens of all kinds had gone into Alder’s body. Alder, who could barely have harmed a fly, was now writhing mass of anger, instinct, and general angst.
Hanz had predicted that Lily would be about the only person he could stand and (thankfully) he was right. Lily’s mere presence was able to soften his tantrums and calm the new titan down. Eventually, Alder would regain his head and be a far more reasonable person.
Lily was going to help them move Alder to a warehouse. He had outgrown his bunker and they had to construct a new one to accommodate his growing stature. And while his skin was about as strong as steel, the weather was growing to a degree that the scientists didn’t want to risk having him exposed. As such, they would move him to a warehouse that, while not completely warm, would keep him protected from the harsher elements. Lily would be needed in case Alder’s hormones spiked.
As she approached the building, she saw a small caravan up front. Alder had a large cloth draped over him, as well as his scarf hanging from his neck. As Lily came closer, some guards wielding guns came and escorted her to Alder. Hanz joined her and they started for the warehouse.
Lily became uncomfortable. The guards rarely carried guns. She turned to Hanz, who also appeared uneasy.
“Why are they carrying weapons?” Lily asked.
Hanz turned to her. “Ve have reason to believe zat Technica is pushing towards ze city. Zere may even be spies about.”
Lily looked about. She had heard rumors that some of the robots could mimic a human’s appearance perfectly. Their fault was when they talked. It was far too electronic.
They marched down a street and up a couple blocks before they reached the warehouse. As they entered, the wind died and the cold lessened. There were boxes stacked all around them, with a wide open space in the middle for Alder to lie down.
As they came towards the center, Lily let out hoarse cough. It resounded throughout the warehouse and was followed by a couple others who had been coughing and sniffing along the way.
Hanz turned to Lily, inquisitive of her health. “Ven did you begin coughing?”
“Oh, only a couple days ago, it’s nothing.” This was followed immediately by a quick spurt of coughs.
Hanz looked at her face more closely. “You are so pale! Und your eyes are red. You should be resting.”
“No I’m fine,” Lily responded. Hearing about a Technica push left her with no desire to relax.
Alder had made his way to the center and laid down, using his makeshift poncho as a blanket. Lily meandered over, trying to stay alert.
“Are you sure zat you are alright?”
“Of course, Doc. Besides, I need to keep an eye on the big guy, right?” Lily shivered, both from the cold and her developing flu. “You guys got a spare blanket, right?”
Alder, who was in a moodier, quieter mood, moved an arm and entrapped Lily behind it. This forced Lily to lie down between his forearm and chest.
“I think he believes you need rest,” Hanz chuckled.
“Ok, it beats a blanket, but I’m not tired. I’ll be up and around as soon as he’s asleep.”
Three hours later and there were few awake. Some guards were taking shifts to keep an eye on the doors.
The wind had picked up and was howling wildly.
A storm was coming.
