Honestly it's a bit easier digitally, also you can sample someone else's colours to see how they do it. Basically the darker parts are less saturated and also shifted slightly towards purple, the brighter part is shifted slightly towards orange, making it jump out. So in coloured pencil you would put down a bright orangey red, then go over it with a darker red leaving the middle part uncovered, then a little bit of dark blue or brown on the darkest parts. The bright spot is at the opposite side of the white highlight. Hope that helps!

The expression is beautifully captivating, and the way you captured the individual characteristics of the two species is incredible, giving it a wonderfully natural look and feel.
