Since I've been ragging on Hugos lately, I thought I'd post this photo. It's the 1989 award, presented by Noreascon 3 in Boston. This particular one belongs to Mike Glyer. It was given to him as a special perq rather than any of the special categories, for "putting the fan back in fanac" or something like that.

I've known Mike since the mid 70's and contributed to his various zines all along. One year that I was in LA for Confurence, I made a point of visiting Mike, bringing Marc Schirmeister along. Mike had several Hugos, but for whatever reason tended t win the particularly ugly ones. This one, a rocket ship on a tilted green bord with gee-gaws pasted on it, inspired me to deviltry. I had a package of G.I. Joe togs with me, and dressed his Hugo up as you see it, then took the photo. We all had a good laugh. I didn't see Mike grind his teeth even once.
