So recently I discovered how to emulate videogames.
my reaction?
FUCKYEAR, time to play all those game that were so fucking awesome and then play the ones I never got to play as a kid. I'm gonna be set for months, I don't need no modern consoles to entertain me.
and uh yeah
that tune changed in less than a week.
There are still some games that hold up well. I downloaded a GBA, N64, Genesis and Nintendo DS emulators. Some of the DS games obviously hold up since they're the most recent but god damn. looking back on some of the stuff I played as a kid is disturbing.
At first I was kinda like "oh hey, this is great, how come we don't make games based off of stupid silly ideas? Dinosaurs with guns fighting ninjas and robot minotaurs? WHY THE FUCK NOT?"
but you really do start to crave substance after a while. You kinda remember what vidyagames are capable of now, and ANYONE can make a simple mario/contra knockoff. 3D or otherwise. So many N64 games look like pastel mud now. There are certainly exceptions, like Star Fox is still great and Banjo Kazooie is still the pinnacle of collectathons (I myself have a soft spot for the GEX games) but as I have learned, man cannot sustain on nostalgia alone.
oh and ironically, the sega genesis? system I never actually had as a kid? That wound up being the more entertaining of the bunch. Perhaps just because it had more shit I never played before.

and so far, Ghost Trick was the only thing I played that actually really engaged me.
Even Earthworm Jim, heavy nostalgia for me, was like
...what the fuck was the POINT in all that? that was stupid
Though I'm still playing Gex.
It's sustainable enough through constant 80's references every 3 minutes xD

In college, I thought I was tired of games. I was playing some modern games and just... didn't care for them. I decided I grew out of games.
Except then I got an emulator and played some games I nostalgia'd about. Like Zelda Ocarina of Time and even better, Majora's Mask. I fell in love with them all over again. Turns out, there are Good Games, and Bad Games. Just as we did back then, we have bad games today.
Nostalgia can help, it adds a new spice to the games we enjoyed then.
One game I loved and there's no good emulation of is Mystical Ninja: Starring Goemon on the N64. Ah well.
