I always wanted her to be a Pegasus, since the Pegasi seem to have a theme of superspeed, and I love speed. I think it also was a good contrast to Black Jack, who had super strength. Fragile Speedster vs. Mighty Glacier is a big theme for Exilo and my characters. Like Black Jack, the original design of the character was made an emulator on dA, but an artist on here was running a special, celshaded ponies for about $5. This was the second commission that I got from her.

The character had two names, and two different designs during her inception. Her first design was called “Candy Cane,” and basically she had an inversion of her colors, being mostly white, with red trims and markings. That was almost too much white, and was hurtful on the eyes, so I changed her and gave her more red over her body. Along with that, I named her “Mai Valentine,” after my favorite desert.

As with any Pegasi, she can fly, and fly extremely fast. I think in relation to someone like Rainbow Dash, on average, she can fly faster than her. However, Mai Valentine has difficulty turning sharply, which Rainbow Dash had shown she can do quite easily. So, basically, she could win in a straight sprint, but not an obstacle course. As far as her cutie mark, I always wanted to give her a heart, but I’m not totally sure what that could represent. If anyone has thoughts, let me know. I mean, is it too campy that her power is love? I think that might explain why she and Black Jack are such good friends, and she might be his only friend. He generally frightens the people around him, but she continues to care for him.
