The Terrors Of the Unknown- PT.4: Survival and Observations
Yeah- there's a fourth part, with Horus as the narrator. If you haven't read the other parts, hit the hand little "Older" button below, or just go to my gallery.
This thing finishes it off nicely, and introduces the Ravagers well. Enjoy!

The buggy had crashed hard- Bast knew what she was doing. Poor girl.
I stood up- a metal body can survive a fall. Even the buggy exploding.
It was the middle of the night, and I could see several dozen Ravager bodies on the burning remains of the Buggy. Bast sacrificed herself, in the vain chance that she could lead hundreds off the edge and to their deaths. Sadly, it wasn’t successful- only a couple dozen acted like lemmings. So many were alive; so many lost their souls. Why did it have to be this way?
I was but the last one left, and only because I became artificial, a machine. But because of that, I had a chance.
I saw some of the Ravagers nearby. They had changed- again. They took roots.
The ravagers were an odd hybrid of plant and animal- wereplants, if you must. One near me had grown right into the ground, stopping it from moving. The tail and legs had stretched, and gone right into the ground. I wonder why...
The water! Of course! I was standing in about a foot of water in this river! Their plant side took advantage of the water, and so is now frozen there.
A large sprout had grown from the thing’s mouth, and the arms had grown out, branching out. It had grown a few leaves, but it was mostly covered in something akin to moss. This was amazing. I knew I had to kill it, though. I needed the Masher.
I went back to the wreckage- the flames. The bodies of the Ravagers had somehow accelerated the flames, melting the metal of the buggy! There was no sign of bodies except for dust. Bast gets to see our old friends again- Seth, Sobek, Osiris, Hathor, and of course the first Anubis. I’ll miss them. I din’t know Osiris or Hathor very well, but they were fellow “gods”. Another time, my friends.

Partial error. Spore is to small to properly identify. It is somewhat like a virus, though. The spores break inside a host’s body and spread the Ravager Virus thought the body. This virus, like any virus, hijacks DNA and spreads its own. In the case of a normal virus, the cell would implode, releasing a swarm of new viruses. With the Ravager Virus, the cell warps, then has something akin to a seizure. Viruses are spat out of the cell as the cell mutates into something between a plant cell and a animal cell. When the brain is reached, it is effected in such a way that the host’s “Soul” is overwritten with commands from the spore. These commands are simply the same as the commands of a lesser creature- survive and reproduce.
I finished my scan of the immobile Ravager’s cell. This may be the first alien creature anyone has yet seen- so it was very likely it would be odd. But like a virus? Our first alien creature we’ve met- apart from those walking alien eye pod things Bast told me about- is a virus. No matter who are what an organism is, the Ravager Virus could effect them. If the Ravagers were to ever reach earth... To horrible to think of.
I deployed my built-in high-powered laser cutter and sliced the Ravager to small bits. Bite-sized chunks. It gave no scream, no indication of any pain as it was shredded. Can these things feel pain?
I needed a way out of this canyon, so I could hold out until ADF arrived. But how long would that be? And did James and Joseph even make it there? So many questions, so many probabilities and possibilities.
I came up on a few lonely Ravagers higher up in a cave, seemingly not knowing that there was a flowing river just outside. I killed two, then sliced open the third after immobilizing it by slicing its legs off. These few only roared when they were about to attack, not when dieing.
Subject: Ravager organism

The insides of the Ravager organism are unlike normal anatomy of an earthly creature. There are no obvious lungs, so presumably they go through a process somewhat like photosynthesis, like an earthly plant- or perhaps they absorb oxygen through the skin, or perhaps they live on something else. Nitrogen perhaps, like a plant. Thus they would need no lungs.
The brain is seemingly gone as well, until a closer inspection is implemented. the grey matter of the brain has been spread out all over the upper torso cavity- but the gray matter somewhat piled up around and near the large heart. It’s like someone took the brain, flattened it out to get rid of the wrinkles, folded it up, and wrapped it around the organs like some type of intelligent bubble wrap. Evidentially, the Ravagers are still trying to figure out the human body.
The heart is another anomaly. It is nearly twice the size it was before, and it connects to several more blood vessels. The blood is green, but it turns red when exposed to oxygen. The cause of this is unknown.
The digestive system was altered as well- it’s not much of a system anymore. It’s normal until it reaches the stomach, which has been enlarged to fit the space that the intestines took up. It doesn’t connect to anything, which leads to the presumption that whatever it eats is absorbed. The extra capacity in the stomach is unknown, though.
Below the stomach are two pods, which when split open, are full of spores. These produce the spores, much alike the pods on the massive vines that started this chaos. The spores also course through the body in a system much like the circulatory system- it even runs alongside the blood vessels. Another defense and reproduction system- the blood infects, because when it is spilt, the blood and spores are mixed- and when another organism apart from another Ravager touches this blood, the spores are absorbed into the blood stream where they start infecting.
The Ravager must use every single part of the prey- there is no exit for waste.
Between the massive stomach and the spore system, there are several unknown organs. One seems somewhat like a second heart, but it is an abnormal shape, and pumps blood only to the lower half of the body. The other two organs have an unknown use.
I finished dissecting the Ravager. It was cruel, but these things used to be human- they aren’t now.
My next goal is to find a place to rest, somewhere to conserve energy. But where?
I unsheathed my larger wings and flew up to the edge of the canyon, and then peeked over the edge of the canyon.
The Ravagers were grouped, seemingly resting under the dawn. There were too many to fight, they would overwhelm me before I took out two dozen. My laser cutter doesn’t have the range to just slice them all in one fell swoop- So I ducked under again. If I can get back to the Abydos, I can retrieve weapons and equipment to fix my damage. But how would I without waking up the masses?
I ducked behind the canyon wall, only inches away from a sleeping Ravager. I could deal with a couple dozen- but a thousand? I’d run out of energy before I managed to kill them all.
I boosted back down into the river. If I traveled along it, I could get out of the way of the Ravagers. I would just start transmitting a distress signal, and wait for the ADF rescue party to arrive. If they picked it up, I could be taken out of here. The possibility of Ravager virus hanging on to me was a problem, though. I don’t want to be the one which infects the entire Earth.
I saw nearly half a dozen immobile Ravagers in the river, and another dozen more on the shores. The weakness of these things is running water, because in the water, they put down roots.
I spotted what must of been one of those Eye-pod things that Bast described to me down in the river a good 200 meters away. It had inverted its legs, and it was drinking through the mouth on the top of it.
The Ravager organisms feed not much unlike a normal creature. They form a pack- the harder the prey, the larger the pack- and gang up on the prey. In the case of the Eye-pod and the Ravagers, only three were needed to take down the ten-foot, multi-eyed creature.
The Ravagers charged the pod first, ripping at it with their massive claws. The eye-pod was also able to fight back, the legs kicking the Ravagers with surprising power. The spikes that the Eye-pod used for feet caused serious injury to the Ravagers. One of the Ravagers was able to get around the spikes, and it ripped a large chunk out of the side of the Eye-pod. It collapsed, and the Ravagers went in for the kill.
They tore it to pieces, and then divided the meat between the each of them. They feed until they nearly puked it back up, even somehow eating the hard chitin shell of the pod. The Ravagers were bloated to bursting, and they stayed still for adsorbtion of the food.
I quickly and easily dispatched the three bloated Ravagers- they put up little of a fight.
I continued down the canyon, encountering little resistance. Daybreak had come, and more Ravagers appeared. And more became immobile because of the river. And thus, more were dispatched.
The canyon became smaller as the ground lowered, then it ended in a cave. I had progressed a good ten miles, and the Ravagers thinned out. The wreckage of the Abydos was visible from this distance, still smoking. I was 23 miles away, by my estimate. There were some Ravagers near, but it was less than 3 dozen. I didn’t bother with those, and flew directly to the Abydos.
Different mutations of the Ravagers are unknown, but some Ravagers do different tasks.
There’s the occasional one that seems to lead the others, like a commander. The general of the army, if you must. They always lead in front of the pack, and they control the group via some type of mental control. The ratio seems to be 1:500, suggesting that there are few of them.
There are many that seem to be part of a Warrior Caste. They do more fighting then any other castes, and they seem to be stronger and they have an easier time wielding various weapons. Most wield melee weapons, like fire axes or metal pipes. A few use guns.
The Worker Caste is akin to a insect’s Worker Caste. They collect food, build protection, the like.
Each caste, as far as has been observed, all work for the Leader Caste. But if one was to remove the Leader Ravager, then perhaps the Ravagers under its lead would lose control, perhaps go rabid. But there is no way of telling the Leader Caste apart from the warriors or the workers, except for the fact that they lead in the front or near front. So if one is attacked by a pack of Ravagers, then they should aim for the front of the pack.
I landed on the roof of one of the towers of the Abydos- one of the ones that reached off the top of the old Temple of the Gods. My lab was inside.
I swung in, kicking a Ravager in the face that was inside the lab.
'This place isn’t yours, Bastard.’ I said as I shot the head off. This is my lab.
It had been completely vandalized, and all the equipment was damaged. A 250000 dollar device that separated traces of super-rare elements from normal extracted rock was on the ground, smashed beyond repair. There were only a few of them ever made, and Abydos housed the three.
I took some time to repair myself, while thinking where the weapons may be hidden. The Abydos was never a military ship, there was only one armory for our own small army, down below the Temple. That’s my next stop once I’ve fixed my damage.
Hah. That 1% damage to my head was the glass on my visor breaking near one of my visual sensors. It gave an odd look. I like it- gives a combat scarred look.
The upper torso damage was what needed to be fixed. My left arm occasionally got stuck because of it- the damage was near the joint. I pried open the broken plate, and then mended a few wires. The joint was slightly damaged- I needed someone else to fix that, I can’t be caught with an arm off. I repaired what I could.
The lower right leg damage wasn’t much but a chunk taken out of the armor. The plates were easily replaced, as well as some of the inner workings of the leg.
The internal damage was the joint damage plus a couple smashed muscle parts- no wonder I’ve been limping for awhile. The muscle parts were harder to get, so I yanked them out of a robot arm I had mounted in a wall for service. The visor was un-repairable; it was a custom made piece.
I completed the repairs, and then proceeded to the armory below the Temple.
Diagnostic complete. Left shoulder joint is at 20.629% damage, left arm movement is restricted slightly.
Visor is un-repairable, another visor piece will have to be created.
Previous damage has been repaired to best quality. No other damage.
I proceeded to the armory with nothing but my laser cutter.
I turned a corner, and ran face-to-face with a Ravager, which in retaliation bit my beak. I cut the head off. It did some damage, nothing serious though. I put my foot through its chest to kill it properly.
Another dashed at me with a large pipe, presumably Warrior Caste. I sliced the pipe in half, then put a large hole through its torso. It collapsed.
'I hope you guys have fun being destroyed when ADF comes.’ I said, kicking the Warrior Ravager. If I still had saliva, I’d spit on it. It used to be human, but now it’s Ravager. The soul is gone, it’s just a husk. A reptilian-plant husk.
Come to think of it, that mix does sound odd when you say it out loud.
I pushed to the stairs, but they were blocked by a massive collapse. I tried a travel tube- the things went inactive when the power went out. The watery liquid they carried in a gravity field was dropped.
Wait, my old quarters... I remember a little last resort in each of them- there was a shaft which ended up much like a long playground slide that led right to the guts of the Abydos and the armory, giving each of the gods access to some of the best weapons. Sobek’s quarters were full of weapons as well. I’ll have to try there first.
The halls were very quiet here. Not even a Ravager walking the halls- perhaps they still thought of this place as sacred?
The red carpet on the ground was dirty and misplaced, the statues in the center of the hall were smashed. The hieroglyphs on the walls were now unreadable in many places where they were blasted by soot, scratched out, covered by some type of liquid, or completely blown away. Some lucky ass soldiers who fought for O’Dell must of made it in here, I haven’t been up here since the crash.
I entered my quarters- or tried to. This side of the upper Temple had collapsed, making my quarters nothing but a small ledge. Damn.
Sobek’s quarters were near mine. His weren’t that effected like mine, but one corner was open to the hot desert air. Weapons were scattered about, but many were broken. I was able to find a few, though.
I picked up a large shotgun that I helped Sobek design. It fired a net which was electrified or something else equally as deadly, then the net stuck itself to the ground. If the target wasn’t killed by the net itself, they would be held down by the net itself- immobile. They would be open to death.
There was also a simple 9MM pistol and a large revolver which reminded me of the Masher. It was the same model; the Masher was just upgraded. I kept the 9MM, no need for the revolver.
There were also two sniper rifles. The first was a special rifle with no barrel or ammo, nor a stock. It wasn’t much but a trigger, a scope, and a small hole at the end of the body. These were usually last resorts as well- they called a single missile down from a small probe that orbited the Abydos and flew alongside. It ran on its own power source, but it was programmed to stay away from the Abydos a certain distance, but to only go such a distance away as well. It also had programming not to enter any atmospheres nearby- so which one did it follow? Is it still floating above, thinking that the Abydos is still floating up in space, or is it down here in this mess? May as well test it out.
I looked out from the hole in the side of Sobek’s quarters, and used the scope to find a group of Ravagers. there was a group of nearly a dozen a good mile away, eating something in one of the streets. I held down the trigger- it shone a laser dot on the ground- then I moved it onto the back of one of the Ravagers.
'Launching missile in 5.’ A small voice said from a speaker in the body.
So it works!
'4.’
'3.’
'2.’
'1.’
'Firing.’
I looked up to see a missile about the size of a service buggy come flying down from the sky just to impact with the Ravagers. It blew them to small chunks and knocked a good hole in the floor.
Oh yeah, the other sniper was a normal long-range combat laser sniper. Nothing that useful, but I decided to keep it anyway. Ravagers, I intend to hold out. Come and get me.
The Orbital Targeting Lance, or the OTL, is Abydos’s purely anti-terrorist weapon. It is small and hand held, allowing easy transport. The built on scope allows for long distance targeting of up to 10000 meters, assuming that the person using the OTL is high enough to get a good aim.
The gun itself isn’t much, just a laser dot, a trigger, a handle, and a scope. But what it activates is what gives the OTL its massive explosive power.
The Defense Orbiter with Guns- or the DOG, is what fires the missile the OTL is so well known for. The acronym is supposed to be a joke from the DOG’s designers. It follows the Abydos several kilometers away, but it has programming to not veer to far away. If there’s an atmosphere nearby, it is programmed to avoid it so it doesn’t burn up in the air.
When the Abydos crashed, the DOG didn’t know exactly what to do. It followed its secondary programming, staying up in above the atmosphere, just hovering above the Abydos- the wreck of it, anyway. The OTL and the DOG are the two most powerful weapons in the Abydosian military, but they do damage when used inside the Abydos- thus they are always the last resort, and rarely used. When the Abydos crashed, authorization for the OTL and the DOG didn’t matter much due to the fact that the Abydos is out of commission. But the OTL will only work as a weapon within the range of the DOG, and so the max effective range would be the area of the Abydos plus a small area outside of it.
I climbed to the highest point in the Abydos- and it was also the easiest to defend, due to the fact that there was only one point that it can be accessed by. I don’t know how many missiles the DOG had, but I could surely take out a few of the Ravagers with them.
The highest point was one of the emitters that created the plasma field that separated the Abydos from the frigid cold in space, when it flew. One was mounted on the roof of the Temple, and it could be climbed. The top was this large glass globe that had some inner workings, but that globe was smashed in the crash. I would have to use the catwalk that went around it as a sniping point.
I had found myself a tattered scarf and an old trench coat from a dead person in the hallways of the lower Temple, he wouldn’t be needing them any more.
The OTL was easily held on my belt, and I kept the shotgun on my back. The holster for the 9MM was on my belt as well, and I also kept a small knife near it. There were hidden under my massive trench coat. This coat reminded me of the ADF uniform- they liked their long coats.
I found an access onto the roof, only having to kill a couple Ravagers. They seemed to be pretty thin in the region of the Abydos now.
The ladder up to the glass globe emitter was very long- a good 400 feet. If I boosted up, I would be spotted easily. My jets were loud. God, what I would do for real wings now...
My scarf (Why I grabbed it, who knows.) and my trench coat billowed in the hot desert wind like a couple of flags. The ladder was rusty and bent in some places, but it seemed intact.
I could see groups of Ravagers all over; some were alone, others were in massive groups. One looked like a hundred in total. That’s my first target with the OTL.
I eventually reached the top, nearly 400 feet above the rest of the Abydos. You can’t get much of a better sniping point than this.
The glass orb was shattered, only the bottom third or so was left. The inner works were a few dozen gears and generators, nothing that important, but they were all over the ground and the catwalk. Why does it always end up with catwalks, I wonder. Probabilities.
Plasma is an odd substance. It’s super heated, and yet it’s not a liquid or a gas. It’s something of a hybrid between a solid and a liquid. Plasma is blazing hot jello, so it’s obviously a good substance for a massive city ship’s shields. Anything tries to pass through, its melted. Anything tries to get out without authorization, they get melted as well. Perfect protection.
The occasional bolt of electricity would break off from the plasma, it was electrified after all. Each emitter was powered to such a degree, the plasma could be super heated and super electrified. They had to be mounted high in case of an electric bolt came off. If they were mounted low, these bolts would do damage to the Abydos and probably kill each time.
When the Abydos crashed, these bulbs went into overload, spraying electricity all about. They must of killed a couple hundred after the crash, and they could of easily knocked out everyone on the Abydos and the surrounding objects. The crash shouldn’t of knocked many out, because it was just a hard landing.
When the New Egypt rammed the Abydos, the plasma netting was ripped. Air was blown out, but for only a short time as the netting fixed itself around the other ship, effectively linking the two sister ships together until they started their descent to HGG42, the Ravager home world. At least, HGG42 should be their homeworld.
Several days passed without much notice. I sniped Ravagers with the OTL, shredded them with the netting shotgun, and eliminated them with the 9MM. I put out a distress signal. It went rather like this:
'This is Horus, the last Survivor of the Abydos/ New Egypt crash. The bastard O’Dell betrayed the Egyptian fleet, and sent the two city ships down to the surface of a planet’s surface. This planet had no name, but it was code named HGG42 for reasons unknown. We survived with just 8000 civilians out of nearly 250000 in total. The New Egypt was set to self destruct by O’Dell, it exploded when it collided with the planet’s surface, killing everybody on board.
The Abydos crash-landed with minimal casualties, but many thousands were killed in the battle caused by O’Dell before.
We survived for a few days, but I actually went through a complicated process to put myself in a robotic body, for safety and technical advantages. It became helpful when the last survivors of the Abydos became afflicted with an alien virus, now named the Ravager Virus. This virus mutated the infected into hybrids of plant and some type of reptile, and these hybrids infected via spores that went with the circulatory system inside of them. Everyone succumbed to the virus except myself; a robot body cannot get infected.
I am calling for evac, I don’t have much energy left- only 20%, but I can last for another day or so. I shall await rescue, just follow the beacon. But when landing, do not come without a hazmat suit, and do not come in contact with the Ravager beasts. I repeat. DO NOT COME IN CONTACT WITH BODILY FLUIDS OF RAVAGER ORGANISMS. The spores are inside them all the time, and a simple scratch can infect. Most have to charge you,but a few do use firearms. If one is infected, shoot for the chest. If the Ravager virus survives and makes it to Earth, the homeworld will be lost. I await your arrival. Message repeats.
I aimed another missile at a group of four dozen Ravagers, and then fired. I took them all out, but a smart warrior was ready for me with a RPG. A well placed rocket could easily take out the stand I was on- and this one did.
'Shit!’ I cried as the pole started to crumble. I fell with it, and so I had to boost to where I could- the canyon. The river could stop the Ravagers.
I flew fast and hard, waking up hundreds of Ravagers, basically saying “Hey, Over here!”. It was a very bad idea.
I landed in the canyon. It was dry.
'Where the hell’s the water?!’ I shouted, in rage. I got my shotgun and 9MM ready- the OTL and the laser sniper wouldn’t be much help in here. To far away from the OTL, and the laser wouldn’t do much. I discarded them, and readied the shotgun. Several dozen Ravagers appeared, then charged. They roared at me, and then attacked.
I knocked one down with the handle of my shotgun, and then put a piston-powered leg through it. Another swung a metal pole at my head- I shot the thing in the chest with my shotgun, killing it instantly.
I boosted up slightly, just avoiding a thrown rock from a friendly warrior. I shot it down with the 9MM, and then melee’d another Ravager in the chest. Its chest caved in.
Were those rockets I could hear behind me?
I broke another Ravager’s skull in and then kicked it back into the crowd knocking down several. A burly looking one came up to me, and grabbed my hands. We fought against each other, his claws mashing, try to bite my head off. He took a chunk out of my beak just as a bullet shattered its chest. I turned around.
'James, that took you awhile.’ I said to the Jackal. He had a group of ADF behind him, and they were shooting down the Ravagers. they were all wearing gas masks, gloves, a full suit- but not a haz-suit. James had a large rifle with him.
'Sorry, I just had to help fight a war back at Earth.’ James replied. A gunship flew above, bombing the pack. All he Ravagers were being summoned here.
'Tell me all about it later. For now, lets get rid of these bastards!’ I shouted. James tossed me a better shotgun.
'Wish Joseph would’ve been here to see this...’ He muttered.
'You lost him as well?’ I asked, blowing a Ravager apart.
'Sadly, yes. But we have to carry on.’ He replied, shooting a couple Ravagers that were coming after him. 'But for now, We fight.’
A tank rolled up, and an important looking fox got out.
‘James, see if you can lead a group behind, take out as many as possible!' He shouted.
‘I hear ya, Jaxx.' James responded. ‘We've got to fight.'
'And we carry on. Until the very end!’ I shouted. Time to get them all.
This thing finishes it off nicely, and introduces the Ravagers well. Enjoy!
