Sorry its so short, I was tired when I wrote this...
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
My buggy easily ramped onto the metal floor of the twice- assaulted Abydos. Of course, the place was completely demolished- I had a hard time driving it through the large wreckage.
A pair of infected ran right out of a near building- and right into my front bumper. I got sprayed by blood from the beasts and my front bumper dented. I should try to avoid the beasts for now...
I drifted around a corner (Service buggies can drift?!), and then darted under fallen pillars. There was a mass of infected in front of the building- it was the building with Horus’s lab! Horus must be holed up inside, fighting them off. But the crowd is too big- how do I get in?
I looked around at the nearby buildings. They were the same bland style of the Abydos- several were also smashed in and broken. Two were intact, and one fell into the building with the lab. We’ve got a way in.
I set the buggy into smashing into the crowd as I got out, taking out some of them. I then ran straight towards the door, slamming it shut behind me. I didn’t need infected chasing me in.
I dashed through the lobby of the building and kicked the door open to the stairwell. The stairs smelt like rotten meat- probably because there were dead bodies at the bottom of it. Were these bodies from the original crash, or the plague outbreak? It’s a very good question.
I continued up the stairs, jumping over one large gap on the way. Some of the stairwell was easy to climb, some of it was just... odd, and some of it went down to my hands and knees. Hard in a tilted building. A tilted city.
I heard a massive crash from below. The infected had broken in!
I had three levels before reaching the roof, so I put it into double gear. I scraped up my knees a bit, getting up that last section, but I didn’t really give a damn. I had a friend to save.
I looked down- the infected were climbing the inside of the stairwell, using their claws for leverage. Bastards had it easy.
I slid down the roof as I exited, and then leaped onto the roof of the building Horus was holed up in. Any luck, and he won’t shoot me as I come in.
I shot down the thick barrier blocking the roof access and entered. Thankfully, the stairs inside of this tower weren’t that badly affected. I made it down to his level in 30 seconds.
Horus swung around and nearly shot me in the face with a large rifle. Wait- he made a few adjustments. Upgrades.
He fixed all the damage on the body and added a few parts. The head was re-shaped into a more avian shape, but it looked a lot like a helmet. The eyes were just a glass visor, and the head had a beak. He also had two large wings that seemed to be bladed, and they also had small rocket-boosters at the ends. The hands and feet were very much like talons, just metal. He made a robotic version of his original self.
'Bast! Thank god- er, us- that you’ve survived!’ Horus said, lowering the rifle which I realized was built into his arm.
'I did, but that’s it.’ I replied. 'Charles got infected somehow, and he killed Alexandra. Poor girl...’ Every time I thought about it, a tear was shed.
'So, we’re the last two.’ Horus said. The speaker he had built in was fixed, it was better quality.
'Yep. How’d you upgrade yourself anyhow? And speak while on the run, there’s infected following me.’ I said, turning to the door to the stairwell. An infected was in the door.
'Damn it!’ I shouted as I vaporized the attacker. Two others came in.
'Bast, stand back! The infection is spread via bodily fluids, don’t get that blood on you!’ He shouted. I uttered a high-pitched yelp as I jumped back. 'Give me the Masher, I can’t be infected.’ I threw him the super-revolver, and he took the lead. I used a shotgun that was on the table near me.
'Alright, these creatures are now officially named the Ravagers. I’ve had a chance to figure out what makes these things tick. The brain was actually pushed back in the body during the infection, allowing the head to split like how it does.’ He jumped onto the tilted roof of the fallen building after vaporizing another Ravager. I climbed up.
'So, the brain and the heart are both in the chest. Blowing off the head just blinds it- so shoot for the chest!’ We slid down the side of the building and hit the ground rolling. Of course, there was that crowd of Ravagers...
'Oh, and they go towards sound. So be quiet. I left a loud generator running in the lab, but if one of us fires... ' Horus muttered.
'It’ll be a lot of running. Got it.’ I whispered. We rounded the corner and ran right into a couple of infected. I, on instinct, blasted one in the chest.
'Damn it!’ Horus cried as the crowd behind us roared. 'Hang on!’ He shouted as his wings unsheathed. They became huge, 20 foot long monsters of blades. He got some altitude, and then grabbed me by the shoulders with his feet, and then got higher.
'Good lord, how’d you do all of this in such a short time?’ I asked as he flew up into the air. He was slow- my weight was too much for his calibrated wings.
'Easy to work when you have tools built in.’ He replied. 'I’m going to drop us off where we parked some service vans. Sorry- buggies. I can’t fly with us both.’ He said. He was changing direction to the far end of the Abydos.
'Why don’t we take one of the gunships?’ I shouted over the wind. We were moving fast.
'The few immune to the virus used them, and quickly got swamped by the sheer amount of bodies piling on them! Only a few buggies left, anyhow.’ He replied.
We moved quick- we ended up on the other end of the Abydos in a few minutes- the only problem was the fact that I was throughly shaken up.
'Sorry about that ride.’ Horus said, dropping me down. We were at a warehouse.
'Run!’ He cried, sheathing his wings. He then armed his arm-mounted gun and fired. A Ravager was behind us!
It exploded in a puff of red mist, his arm cannon was pretty powerful as well.
'Perhaps I shouldn’t of used that, that explosive blast was my only one...’ Horus muttered, loading the Masher. A Ravager came up on us from the side, Horus blew it to mist with one shot, one arm. The recoil didn’t do much to him.
Get in the front seat, I’ll take the rear and I’ll also protect our asses!’ He shouted as we saw a dark red buggy. I jumped in and started it up as Horus crouched in the rear bay.
‘Drive!’
Well, this is it. The final run. The last goodbye. Exit stage left.
I smashed through a pile of barrels at full speed, sending them and their contents of foodstuffs everywhere, starting off this chase with a bang.
The sky was darkening, rain was fast approaching. We had to find somewhere to hide, away from the sand, away from these sad ruins...
I swerved around a small group of Ravagers, letting Horus blow them to hell.
'Any idea on where to go?’ I shouted.
'We need to find a rocky area, away from the sands!’ Horus shouted back. 'A rocky area about a mile square should give us ample protection from the vines and the terrifying night- Perhaps one of the canyons the rivers run through.’
'Good idea!’ I shouted back, running over a lone Ravager. Not much damage to the buggy, thankfully...
I crashed through another makeshift dwelling, and then jumped into one of the streets of the Abydos. The devastation was insane.
Flames were burning in the distance, replacing the usual smoky atmosphere of the old city ship. The neon signs that were common were now either missing, broken, or ruined. The only light here was the natural light from above, there was no power. and that natural light was fading fast; dusk was coming.
I switched on the head lights so I could see the wreckage in front of me.
'We best get off the Abydos, quick! Night is coming!’ Horus roared, blasting a hole in a wall in our way. I switched on the headlights and drove through.
'I think there’s a canyon a good thirty miles away from here- keep going this way!’ Horus continued, blasting another group of Ravagers.
'Wait- we’re on the far end of the Abydos...’ I said.
'Yep.’ Horus said. 'Hang on tight!’
We then drove straight off the edge of the tilted Abydos- the drop was a good 50 feet, but Horus was able to slow it down somewhat. We landed with a hard crash- the sand saved us.
'Could you warn me when I’m about to crash off a massive cliff?’ I asked. Our buggy had landed on its wheels, but I stopped it.
'Sorry, best if you don’t know when you’re plunging to a probable death.’ Horus responded. 'Now drive!’
A Ravager leaped the massive jumped and landed almost perfectly, seemingly uninjured. Another came. And another. And another.
Horus readied the Masher and fired. It splattered a Ravager all over the rest of the group.
'Damn it, more are coming!’ I shouted, because a couple dozen were emerging from the makeshift covers around. I smashed through another shelter, and in the process ran over two Ravagers. They nearly flipped the buggy.
'Careful!’ Horus shouted.
'Enough with the damn back seat driving, Horus.’ I responded. I looked behind us as we speed down the sands.
'Holy Shit! Hundreds!’ I cried. I hit a sand dune hard then, flying over it and nearly flipping the buggy- again.
The crowd behind us was huge, and more just kept on coming.
‘New plan! Hope that this buggy can out run the masses!’ Horus shouted, shooting at the crowd. A good few were killed by the blast from the Masher, but it barely dented their numbers. The roar of the herd was massive, and made my ears ring.
‘Join us...’
‘Come to us...’
‘Be one with us...’
‘No! I won’t join you bastards!’ I screamed back.
‘Bast, are you alright? They’re just roaring- not speaking.’ Horus said.
‘I could of sworn they were trying to pull me back...’ I responded, driving over a tall dune. I was kicking sand into the split faces of the Ravagers.
‘Bast- there’s a canyon another 4 miles from here. Do you think you can make it?’ Horus asked.
‘Still half a tank in this thing. I can make it.’
Behind us, a couple thousand Ravagers were running after us. Oh yeah, night just fell.
I swerved out of the way of a large vine that pushed its way out of the ground, nearly sending us up with it. A massive tilted tree-thing grew out right under us, creating a hell of a ramp that was growing in front of us.
‘What flipping luck!’ Horus cried as we kept up the tree. It suddenly burst into branches, dropping us. We bounced off a large vine, and landed in the sand on our side. The Ravagers were still catching up.
‘Help me with this!’ I shouted as I tried to right the buggy. I was a little short on breath.
‘I’ve got it.’ Horus replied as he got up from the sand. He grabbed the side of the buggy, and flipped it back onto its wheels. I got back in the driver’s seat.
‘Keep on going! We’ve got another two miles!’ Horus shouted as we started driving again. The Ravagers were getting really close...
‘Give in, Bast...’
‘Join us...’
‘JOIN US!’
‘No! I shall not give in!’ I cried. My head was really hurting, and my hands were twitching.
‘Bast! Hang in there!’ Horus shouted as we sped towards the canyon. My eyes were twitching- then one suddenly cracked. My vision changed; warped.
‘ARGH!’ I cried. The buggy swerved. My claws were growing longer. I was infected? How? When? Why...?
‘Oh god... Bast, you’re infected!’ Horus shouted.
‘I think I can feel that.’ I replied. My teeth grew sharper, and some scales started appearing.
'New... plan. I can lead many to their deaths by driving straight off the cliff and into the canyon. Horus... You’re the last survivor.’ I said. My tail grew longer with a loud crack, turning to a large, scaled stinger. I fought against it, keeping it from attacking Horus.
'GIVE IN TO US!’
'LET YOUR CARES WASH AWAY!’
'JOIN US!’
'I... won’t...’ I muttered, shedding some tears. These were my final moments...
'Bast, hang in there. Just keep driving.’ Horus said. His voice was faint.
My claws grew to foot-long monsters, but I held onto the wheel, even after they grew scales. A searing pain in the back of my head... Not scales...
‘ARGH!’ I screamed as a new pair of eyes pushed its way out of the back of my head. Another appeared on the lower side of my now scaled-jaw, giving me a good view down my own shirt. Each view point was there, just warped. I tried to pay attention to the first views.
‘JOIN THE HIVE!’
‘GIVE IN!’
‘JOIN US!’
The screams were breaking off into roars. Then came the real mind-breaking. The whole group of survivors, the whole 8 thousand were crying my name.
‘Join us, Bast...’ They said.
Then they started screaming as my head split and my feet changed.
I was losing myself...
‘Ra, bring Bast home...’
