I find it wonderful that he's wearing a Maori Fishhook pendant. It's those little things that tell a story about the character.

I haven't been sure what that story is, though. I've often wondered what the significance of that pendant is. Maybe I should have just asked Blotch a long time ago, heh. So, either of you, erm, what's the significance of it?
(btw, I HAVE Googled it, and all I can turn up is that it's by an old tribe in NZ)

Well, at face value, it's a good luck charm. It also has meanings of authority or power. But it may have some deeper meaning to the character. Was it a gift? Who gave it to him? Did he buy it? Any special reason? Or, it could be that he felt like wearing it that day.

I'm probably reading too much into it. I always like to look for something that tells a story about a character.

You're both right. It's a carved jade fish-hook from New Zealand. You're not supposed to buy them for yourself as they are meant to be given to you. It is customary to wear them for some time once received, during which the wearer's skin oils will slowly change the colour of the pendant (they are often made of bone as well as jade). The Maori (NZ natives) took this to symbolise the wearer's soul slowly starting to inhabit the pendant.

Diego's koru hook was a gift from Bayshore from the summer prior to the comic, given to Diego the same day the otter got his koru tattoo/branding thing. ;]

So now you know..! ;D

Thanks kindly for filling us in, Blotch! I wasn't familiar with the background of Diego and Bayshore, but the hook was just something I picked up on in this picture and hoped there was a little story behind it.
