Here I am cleaning No. 65's wheels and rods. I can always tell you that you can't become an engine driver straight away! Like it was in BR (British Railways) days, there is a hierarchy to it. You'd start out as a cleaner before progressing onto the ranks of passed cleaner, trainee fireman, fireman, passed fireman, and finally, driver.

I believe that's the way it should be. After all, while cleaning the engine a sharp eyed youngster might notice loose fittings, potential leaks and worn pins. In time as the engine cleaner progresses along, he'll become familiar with the equipment he works with and understand how it works, or at least should be working correctly.
