Yes, finished. I had great fun making this. There are some problems encountered (like the dark lighting fixture) though and I am just lazy to correct. Want to work on a new one.

Well, my advice would be to plan things before starting one. Make sketches, color studies, light studies, etc. It is quite difficult just jump into modelling and rendering stuff in 3d, and often times you would run into problems, planning help to smooth things. I haven't made much plan into this project, just small sketches on my notebook, but it is a great help in making this image.
Also, gather some references. Aside from my sketch for character design and pose, I rev up google image search for inspiration and reference. I gather pictures of bars and furries and animals, etc. Then I use my references to compose this image.
And of course, you have to understand your tools. Know its limitations. Know what and how you could achieve things with it. Each has their own quirks. Be familiar with your tool (by using it) and things would go much easier.
And last, study, dissect and even imitate works of others. They had already done and achieved things you wanted to learn so why not learn directly from them and their work?
I'm not that skilful yet but I feel these proved helpful to me. Hope they will help you.
