THE PROUD WITCH OF OZ - A Short Story set in the Land of Oz
This one is an original short story set in the famous fairyland created by L. Frank Baum. None of the famous characters are presented in this one, although one character from the books is mentioned as a cousin of the main character.
16 year old Texas farmgirl Wendy Wylie, an orphan living with foster parents in a remote farmhouse, chases after a rabbit attempting to steal from the farm's carrot patch, only to find the thwarted thief zapping out of existence. When she turns to leave, however, the sudden appearance of a sinkhole drags her into the ground and surges her beneath the ground and through waterbeds, depositing her at another farm...except this farm is located in the Quadling Country, south of the Emerald City in the magical fairyland of Oz.
And the witch living in the nearby cottage isn't too thrilled that this girl ate one of the carrots in her crop...
The Wandering Talespinner, an exile from the land of Oz, hopes you enjoy this little tale! If you do, he'll conjure up another one!

I really enjoyed your Land of Oz story.
I'm a big fan of the Oz Series, although I have only read about 9 of them.
The pacing and themes are very much like Baum's, great job! Even Wendy's clothes and the description of Texas had great details and were in theme.
I loved the interaction with Minerva Mulch, all the usual Oz confusion. And her logic of being a 'proud witch' and how she lived up to it, being too proud to just fix a problem she didn't make. I like that she is liked and respected and that her actions are fair; a theme for several 'opponents' in the Oz books.
The transformation was great, nice timing, and teasing from the witch :) The changes and reactions of Wendy were priceless! She also became such a character! Wily Wendy (great name, and such an Oz pun) the bunny girl with a cute lisp. I also like how she learned her new role and was so apt at it.
The ending with Minerva and Wendy was great and touching and seems like a great relationship. With Wiley Wending getting what she needed/wanted without knowing it.
I look forward to seeing more of her stories. I could see her exploring Bunnybury or running errands for Minerva and getting into an adventure. Or discovering that she lives up to the Wily part of her name now, getting more and more sly and crafty.
Amazing job! I loved it!

Thanks so much for your kudos, Butter! I intend to make that story a little bigger, and provide some elaboration on her situation at the same time. Rest assured the two characters WILL visit Bunnybury, and in so doing engage in a pretty wild and crazy adventure in the process!
As it stands, too, she'll be meeting Dorothy Gale in this story as well. ;)

You are very welcomed!
The story is great as is, so I'm the elaboration will be great too.
hehe, I'm looking forward to hearing about their wild and crazy adventure with going to Bunnybury! I'm soo excited :)
Ooh, that will be great! as in all the later Oz books, everyone has to meet Dorothy Gale :3

Your story and us talking about Bunnybury, got me excited about the Oz books again.
I ended up re-reading 'The Emerald City of Oz' :)
I forgot how beautiful, glamorous, and upscale Bunnyburry was!
It was fun to read about the clothing, buildings, and performers they have there.
I think Wily Wendy will look like quite the country bunny there and will have quite the adventure!
I'm looking forward to it!! <3

"Emerald City" is actually among my favorites of the series(although I have to admit...I like all 14 of Baum's books).
I should remind, though, that my stories are technically retcons of the plots in the original books, although I don't make radical changes to any characters(other than one...Betsy Bobbin...but that's another story ;)).
There's also a villain in the "Emerald City" book that I use more than Baum uses the Nome King: the First and Foremost. I've made him capable of transforming others as well as his own people. Some of my stories have him messing with a lot of the Oz characters. Especially Dorothy, who he wants to have as a live "trophy"...technically a slave...since she's renowned for killing two witches and having her in his clutches would demoralize the people of Oz.
But I'm getting ahead of myself! The revised "Proud Witch" story is forthcoming...hope you'll enjoy it! ;)

Emerald City was a great book! and nearly closed up the stories in such a nice way.
Ah, I didn't realize that your stories were retcons intermingling with the original stories. That is pretty fun. And I heard the hints of Betsy Bobbin :3
That is a fun twist on the First and Foremost, his people do a lot of shape shifting. Hehe he does like making people miserable just for fun and his own kicks. I could see him transforming his own slaves.
You have been inspiring me with your writing too :)
ooh, I'm looking forward to it! Should be fun!

Well, Baum's material in Bunnybury is more or less in the public domain, but if you mean characters of my creation...like Minerva Mulch...my only caveat would be to show me the story before it is posted. Just so I can get a handle on whether or not the presentation of the character goes along with the personality I envisioned for her. She's something of an antihero, so to speak. She's generally a good witch, but she has her sense of vanity as well.
The bigger version of this story is still unfinished, but I'm at least at the point where Dorothy has been changed. It's just a matter of finishing the narrative up and giving the whole shebang a final polish. I already know how it's all going to end, and it wouldn't be an Oz story if it didn't have a happy ending. :)
Looking forward to seeing what you cook up! :)
