Throw their insults right back at them with some witty comebacks. What I usually do, and when they don't stop... Well, when a punch gets thrown, I usually pull out whatever yo-yo I happen to have with me. They know it was a weapon before a toy, so they usually retreat. Just learn something to make them not wanna try going against you. When it gets really bad, a way to make them fear you keeps them away. I have to deal with blighters that throw all kinds of insults at me and occasionally try to break my fingers via a locker slammed on them, so I give them a reason to run. I usually carry a metal yo-yo, and I can kick pretty high.
But my strategy's when you get 5-10 insults a day, or punches thrown.

Well, use some witty comebacks then. And not those crap 'yo mamma' jokes. I will warn you though, some will try to use fists after some returns. I only know how to deal with them after going through hell's daycare in elementary school. Kids were allowed to brawl it out...
