The last motel picture I plan on submitting from my ride. The is the Motel Bel Alton, proof that not all motels share the grimy "pay by the hour" image. This place was nothing short of immaculate. Everything from the landscaping to the swimming pool looked meticulously well maintained. Even my mother, who has rarely been outside a Holiday Inn admitted she'd consider staying here.

I think the condition of some are due to location, if they are close to the interstate they seem to be in better condition then ones away from one
This is due to the mindset of the destination being more important then the journey, However, that mind set is slowly going away thanks to things like CARS
Route 66 is now something no other road has been before a 'historic landmark' It took a long time to get USDOT to give it that, many states lobbied for it
Many are rediscovering things like these old motels, hotels & attractions that dot the most famous road in the whole world, surpassing even the autobahn

That is definitely true. Often lack of business is what pushes old motels to either go out of business or adopt pay-by-the-hour tactics. I noticed quite a few well-kept operating motels along here and that is probably due to the fact that this highway hasn't been bypassed so just being along this highway and being very visible probably generates revenue.
That is definitely true. I myself like to enjoy the journey almost as much as the destination. I personally don't like driving highways. While the journey might be shorter it feels a lot longer, because you just skip everything. I like to see these places, and you miss all of them traveling on an interstate. I know both me and my father enjoy these backroads and old highways and will purposely take them instead when nobody else is with us.
