No noise reduction was used here.
If and when I do use noise reduction, I apply it selectively through other software (never in-camera), and that's usually done on the background (the flat, out-of-focus areas will show the most noise) and almost never on the subject. Sometimes, I'll prefer keeping the fine detail with the noise instead of smearing it away with NR. Yes, noise can be distracting, but noise reduction can be just as bad, or worse, if it's not carefully applied.
The D800 is a beast. The high resolution alone will provide a lot of advantages. You may not see them in images resized for the internet display/usage, but they are very visible in printing (obviously) and during post-processing. Be aware, though, that the camera will show any flaws your lenses may have. The 36MP sensor won't outperform or 'out-resolve' any of today's lenses, but it can expose defects in the optics that probably weren't visible or very minor on other cameras.

I agree with your first paragraph and I try to do the same myself =) I'm just surprised at how low the noise is here, even on most of the background without any noise reduction (selective or otherwise). My D7000 could not pull this off at ISO 2000 XD
Yea, looking forward to the D800. I really need a new lens or two first though, so those/that is on my list first. Debating the 24-70 or 14-24. It's a "high quality problem" as they say =)
