The combat in this game is actually real-time, not turn-based by the looks. You can circle around an enemy to dodge attacks and backstab, just need to be a bit fast though. Try not to get yourself cornered, always find a place with at least 4 squares to move. With practice you'll get through.
The secret puzzles are quite hard though.
