Meet Coby, the loyal fox and familiar to Flynn, mechanic and magician. This story serves as an introduction to the setting and follows the two as they encounter breakfast troubles, a drunk dragon, and overexcited levitation spells. Wheee!
For the longest time--years really--I've wanted to do a story about a magician and his familiar, but told from the familiar's point of view. Most attempts involved a standard "hidden magic" world with the two running a shop while solving random problems. But by the time I fleshed out Coby and Flynn's characters, I found that I'd lost all interest in that sort of modern magic setting. So I scrapped it, and gave these two their own world!
I'm hesitant to use the term "labor of love" to describe this piece, since I procrastinated like always while writing it, but I loved designing these characters and it's great to finally give them a story after so long.
Oh, and while I'm currently working on adding .txt versions to some of my stories, that won't be happening with this one. The way it's formatted for Coby's commentary prevents a plain text from working.

Heeeeeeeeee.
So, familiars are something I've always had something of an interest in their relationship (in fact it may be one of my favorite roles to be in myself), so seeing a story from the familiar's point of view was something I found to be a lot of fun.
Also must say I found the footnotes amusing, and it reminded me a lot of Terry Pratchett. That's a good thing, he's my favorite author of all time.
I think I'm going to have to take a look at more of your stuff.

I see might have to check him out some time.
I do highly reccomend Pratchett. He was a British fantasy writer famous for his Discworld series. He tended to have a lot of asterisks throughout his books that led to footnotes, usually with an explanation of some certain bit of backstory or an extra punchline for a situation. Or in the case of the book Good Omens sometimes the footnote basically just said "If you were British you would find this hilarious."
