The bald guy, Allan, has a terminal case of pancreatic cancer. His fiancé, a writer named Lenore, is soon widowed after a couple of weeks of his hospital stay. Lenore, extremely unstable from the sudden loss of her would-be husband, begins to write and write and write about this raven-like creature she dubs Kingsley Theodore, casually known as King.
King's character takes in all of her sorrow and grief without hesitation. Before long, he's become an actual entity, though unbalanced and unable to wander freely. You see, the Raven needed something other than pain to live; he needed a soul.
Lenore's anguish kept Allan close to her even after his death, close enough for King to devour, to capture, to combine with. King dug his talons into the unsuspecting soul and gained passage into the physical world, towing along a couple of Allan's characteristics, including a steadfast loyalty to Lenore.

Now he guards her in the shadows, aiding in the mysterious disappearance of any who give the slightest inconvenience to the widow.
