As in the case of Carlone, virutally every member of the Akito family has gotten some form of magical talent in their genes, including Reign; as with Alek, it seems that he took much more from his dragonic heritage than he did his pangolin side.
Unlike Alek or Carlone, however, Reign has been gifted with an altogether unusual form of magic - the ability to smell it. Oh yes, magic has a smell, and it's....a weird one, really. There's no real world equivalent to what many of the spells, charms, curses and hexs smell like, and there's typically no real way of covering it up either. Naturally, when someone has a cousin like Alek, who's body is literally reeking of magic (in an alluring way), Reign can be a tad...skittish.
That may partly be due to his own body, though, compared to Alek's own. Reign is in no ways obese, or weak, but he does have that muscle gut, and compared to Alek...yeah, his self-esteem is a little skewed. Still, even with his crazy family, he loves each and every one of them to death.
...he'd still wish that his ears weren't so big he'd need to hide them in his hair though.
This picture was a great follow-up from Uni and Aqua's previous picture of Reign, and the rest of his cousins, viewable from earlier on in my gallery, and the first proper ref of Reign. He really is a very blue oriented person (he even enjoys the blues, go figure), and Uni went up up and beyond with this freebie. Check out his gallery sometime, and Aqua's too. Their wares are also worth checking out...do do so.

Originally, he was only supposed to have a bit of puppy-fat. However, Uni's drawings of him have been enough to tempt me to give him a slightly different body-mass.
Actually, Reign was kind of a proto-Taiko when I was still starting out on Yiffstar's forums, and the "smell magic" bit was something that I thought would be an interesting twist on things. So many people in fiction can just "sense" magic, but it's such a vague description. Surely, as magic is depicted in needing a constant source of concentration and or power/energy, it has a decay to it, which would release particles that someone with the right kind of nose could smell, as it were...and that's it.
And that's another thing that Reign is a little sheepish over - he hasn't found a good use for his talents. He can use them all he wants - in fact he can't exactly turn them "off" - but there's really not a market for people who can sniff out magic. It's kind of like being able to sniff out when a kind of insulation has been used in a building - not that handy unless it's a dangerous kind.

It reminds me of another (vaguely) similar, unique premise... Tony Chu's cibopathy in "Chew": http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Chew :P
