I saw Steve Irwin rescue a roo from a pit once, and he just grabbed onto the tail and hauled it out and then held on for dear life as he tried to steer it away from hopping right back into the pit. So it seems their tails are pretty sturdy and capable of supporting their weight. Which makes sense, since they can rear up on their tail to kick you.
