well for one thing, most anthros dont wear clothes becuase they have warm fur because animals dont wear clothes at all (unless your Paris hilton's dog), but then again you dont see animals acting like people walking upright and possibly talking either ^^

it is true that humans are the only animals that really -need- clothes to survive... but I could imagine that clothes are useful to furries for personal adornment--decoration, to either distract from lesser appreciated qualities or to augment certain details that they feel suit them well... also for the function of protection from more adverse environments...
and when you have society, you have individuals who act against some of their instincts in the pursuit of greater success or comfort. I'm glad for pants, particularly, so that I don't have to advertise the more disturbing contents of my mind when I see, say, MocHi naked >_>;;

I guess it's true that some prefer to eschew clothes in the case of furries, but I think it adds a nice layer of social illustration to it all ^^ after all, the gimmick is that we are intelligent animals, yes?

i agree with what you say, i think clothes ( or for instance fur patterns ) can add personality or even be used to distinguish themselves from other furries, its all in the style and body language
