Alette and Beau are never quite there, for a variety of reasons.

It's an interesting piece clearly creates a sense of nostalgia for something that could never be fixed, so I know the core theme about their past life. The top image displayed in the sky clearly denotes it as almost like a dreamlike fantasy, but more concrete and tangible than a wisplike vapor of an idle fantasy of riches, so it's a memory. The pastel colours help aid in displaying it as a few soft and delicate life style, very easy without much strife or difficulty.
Crashing back down to reality, you have the pose in a relative same pose, and there's some details I'm not entirely sure were intentional. The pose is sort of altered, where previous the old man was pouring juice, now pouring for himself, I'm reading that as a disruption. where he was once caring and co-operative, he's now more grizzled from their recent troubles. The Red gives it a opressive amoust desert like intensity that signals not just danger but active hosility not just between them through their current living conditions. With these two things I get a sort of "Rose Madder" feel to it, which makes it uncomfortable to view. ( Having previously dealt with living in poverty. I can relate to it in a empathic way.) His expressions even convey a shift and understanding that life has suddenly got tougher, and he's become world weary of having lost their fortune and pleasant life style. She on the other hand with her expression remaining the same despite the change, I can read it as being stoic with a strong self-efficy in how she'll deal with it, .. to something inspiring pity, where she's not comprehending the depth of the problem. (To be cruel I'd describe her demeanor could be seen as senile ... I had an Aunt who suffered for Alzheimer's disease, she didn't quite understand the problem, but knew something was wrong. So I'm probably reading too personally into it.)
Note: Zanity asked for Critique in his Journal.

I was thinking of ways on how I could suggest an improve, and I'd work on trying to soften their body lanauge and alter the shade of colour to make it a less Danger zone red, although I appreciate it could be at Dawn which makes it the most realistic or viable option. But I'd have the old person, give a more of concerned smile at his wife, maybe hold her hand .. while she could mend his hat which would make her smile less out of place. There just seems to be a gulf between them that's giving a "bad vibe", I've seen your comic on dA (?) so I know the dynamic between them is like a cynical playfulness, .. but this has a higher intensity, that a more positive force of their personalities doesn't come through.
To note, Beau is adding some of their home-made, likely hallucinogenic, concoctions to his tea. It may not have been discussed enough yet in the art I have relating to them, but he's often digging into reality altering substances, partly for the fun of it and partly to escape the reality they face. And what you said pretty much describes Alette, lol. She suffers from dementia, generally forgetting the seriousness of the situation and how much her life has changed over time. I haven't decided the cause of her dementia yet, but I already know what the conclusion to their story will be and I really don't think it's something that will come up. Also, my father developed early onset Alzheimer's, which apparently runs strongly in my family, and that I'm basing some of her behavior on, so no, you are not reading too personally. :P
I was trying to use the same base color scheme for each side - soft oranges and hard oranges - with one connecting color to show the contrast and connection between the two. Perhaps the harder orange side would have benefited from more grays so that it seems less immediately dangerous.

They're just friends that fit together like puzzle pieces. Their families assumed they would marry but when they realized it was never going to happen, Alette's family resorted to constantly chiding and even threatening Beau about it. I'll be making some comics about the nature of their relationship with her family later; I can't help but imagine it quite funny.
