I think this is a six-spot burnet moth. Or at least one within the same family.

It's a cinnabar moth in my view; I once raised some from caterpillars.

Hmm, that does seem to make a lot of sense. ^_^ It's not very often that I see cinnabar moths. I'm now doubly pleased with this photo. Thankyou

They grow on ragwurt plants, so if you look for them you'll find their orange and black stripey caterpillas too, which are quite impressive. It's a good photo you have here, cinnabar moths seem to spend so much of their time in the grass.

There was quite a lot of ragwort about in this field, I must check again while the weather's nice. Also, thankyou! The grass must've been about 4 foot high in the are I got this pic.
