Sting those cannuks!

I do know about the conventions of manga, so the huge, oily looking drop near the forehead of one of the characters in this work wasn't a mystery. But I am a little puzzled to see so obvius a comic booky thing in a more or less realistic painting. I've examined myself, wondering if this might be just a cultural prejudice. But had a siilar "Western" device -- like comic swearing (@#*&!), or daggers from the eyes, and theystill didn't seem to fit either.
