But what animal to use...

It seems like a familiar might go through some seriously heavy questions about identity if it, all of their memories, and everything that defines them can fade away--especially by just getting too far away from someone. Very "Flowers for Algernon."

Well as long as the owner doesn't abruptly cut their ties the familiar should be ok. But if something like an owner's untimely death were to occur when a familiar is still tremendously dependent, they could lose a lot (but still be a somewhat "improved" animal over their companions). But it is possible for familiars to become quite experienced in their lives and accrue enough power on their own that they may continue on without their master.

So what happens to the mind of the creature the familiar is made from?... I mean if its a hostile takeover then it might be disagreeable, and if it's just an add-on then couldn't the familiar "rebel?"
