Made a Batman-themed Birthday cake for my friend's birthday, which we celebrated on Saturday :)
The cake is mint dark chocolate, with chocolate buttercream, covered in rolled fondant (which I coloured myself), decorated with a yellow fondant Batman emblem (the bat was drawn on with an edible (food colouring) marker. There are Batman emblem molded chocolates on the sides, and the trim and script are vanilla buttercream.
So...kinda the before-and-after photos ;) I didn't realize I had put so much buttercream in between the layers of cake! XD But...it's all good. Everyone liked it, and it tasted great, so that's what matters, right? :)

It's pretty much what you said ;) It can be made out of mashmallows and powdered sugar, or boughten pre-made (which is what I like getting). It can be rolled out to cover a cake, or it can also be used for other things, like making realistic-looking flowers, making little sculptured figures on a cake (or cupcake!), cover your mechanics a little better than you could with buttercream (ex: if you made a tree out of cake, you can cover the trunk in fondant and make it look like it's bark) etc etc. It's basically an alternative way to decorate a cake than with straight-up buttercream :) In fact, I actually find making realistic-looking roses to be much easier to make out of fondant then with buttercream :)
Some people like it, others don't. I prefer one brand of fondant (Satin Ice) over Wilton (which I used to make this one) cuz I like the vanilla taste over the marshmallow taste...I like them both, but like Satin Ice more ;)

Yeah, it was definitely a lot of buttercream between the layers! XD I had no idea that I put in so much till I cut through it XD But it was all good, everyone still liked it :) My chocolate cake recipe is very moist, and goes VERY well with ice cream :) Been making that recipe since I was a teen :)
