"The pain has receded but what's left is the shell of the pain, an empty space where there should be pain but instead there is the expectation of pain."
- Audrey Niffenegger, The Time Traveller's Wife
This is something I needed to draw for myself, the above quote hit a chord in me and conjured up this image. To me, she had found the perfect way of describing the ebb and flow of chronic pain.
I hope at least one person sees this who truly understands.

After a year of active pain management, I'm doing much better than I used to. So much so that I've managed to reduce the amount of pain medication I need on a daily basis. Much of the work has been about separating the pain from the suffering, as it is the latter that affects my quality of life more. But none of that takes away the fact that I'll spend the rest of my life in pain, which will only get worse over time. I very much try not to dwell on that though, but to tackle each day's pain separately.
On that cheerful note, how are you?

I'm sorry to hear about your mum. I don't know what her pain management is like, but check out this website: https://www.acticare.com They do a machine that eases pain with a low electric current sent through the skin into the spine (it sounds awful, but doesn't hurt at all, I promise). I use one and it's really helpful.
I'm doing okay in many ways. Busy at work, but I've just passed my final exams and have a further qualification. I'm going to avoid exams for a while, I think. Also, I now have more letters after my name than I have in my name, which is rather amusing. ^_^

Sorry for taking so long to respond. Been a bit of upheaval in my life. :(
Yay for letters after your name. I will pass this on to Mum but I'm not sure how much help it will be. Rheumatoid is an autoimmune disorder where the body attacks joint tissue because it thinks it's an external aggressor. The body can be stupid sometimes. :(
