When something DOES go wrong, everyone's already panicking. Seeing how hard it is to herd panicked people, since they're just about the most stubborn idiots on the planet, it's best to pick an effective solution, no matter how crude, traumatising and weird it may be. I mean, would you prefer being eaten by a giant safety snake, get run over by a crazed mass or slowly choke in space?
Hey, I'm not knocking it or saying it's a bad idea, I'm just saying it's unconventional. In simple terms, it's an emergency response system that gets everyone to safety in case of depressurization in the fastest way possible given all the potential variables. Like I said, unconventional, but quite effective, especially for the reasons you pointed out.
